Final, Fan-Chosen EVO 2017 Title Has Been Decided

It’s all been kicking off with EVO 2017 as the event organisers have opted for a community-funded vote to decide which will be the ninth and final fighting game title to be entered into the competitive event.

It was a close call between Marvel Vs Capcom 3 and, would you believe it, Nintendo’s Pokken Tournament, with the former coming in at $71,690 and the latter earning $66,906.

The vote was really only dominated by these two titles, with third place going to Killer Instinct at $6,116 and Windjammers next with $4,000. All donations were given to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and acted as a way of deciding the ninth and final title for EVO 2017.

This means Marvel Vs Capcom 3 will have a tournament in EVO 2017 alongside the finals for Street Fighter 5, Tekken 7, Super Smash Bros Wii U and BlazBlue: Central Fiction. This is in addition to competition for Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator, Super Smash Bros Melee, Injustice 2 and King Of Fighters XIV.

The vote itself was quite controversial among the FGC, sparking arguments between Pokken Tournament and MvC fans as to the former’s plausibility as a competitive fighting game.

While it’s true that Nintendo’s Pokemon fighting game has its flaws, it’s quietly managed to build up a following since the game’s launch, and that huge $67,000 worth of votes is perhaps testament to that.

As a result of Pokken Tournament’s surprising success during the EVO 2017 vote, EVO has also announced that it will be donating $10,000 to help support the competitive scene surrounding the game.

It’s not yet clear exactly how this money will be used, but it’s a delightful gesture on EVO’s part that could help the otherwise maligned Pokken Tournament community to build up a little extra credibility.

EVO 2017 will take place between the 14 and 16 July and will be hosted at the Mandalay Bay Events Centre in Las Vegas.
