The latest patch update for the superhero team-based PvP shooter Marvel Rivals will roll out a new feature revealed in the recent Developer Vision update. This feature in question, Costume Customization, allows players to further customize their own cosmetic costumes for their favorite heroes, of which, at launch, only specific outfits will be available to alter.
As such, the developer released the patch notes for the v.20250415 update, which confirmed that the Costume Customization feature will go live on 17th April 2025 at 2 am PT / 5 am ET / 9 am UTC and revealed which costumes are eligible for this feature. The developer made a follow-up statement, posted to the Marvel Rivals Twitter account, sparked much discussion across social media as specific details about acquiring a color scheme or recolor for specific costumes garnered mixed reactions from players who made their thoughts known online.
So, what's all the commotion surrounding the Marvel Rivals' Costume Customization feature? In an official statement posted to the Marvel Rivals Twitter account, NetEase Games clarified some initial concerns about this feature in relation to how players can customize the eligible costumes in-game.
Firstly, the cosmetic costumes that are eligible to be customized through this feature are Legendary tiered and have unique color schemes available for these costumes, which are as follows:
- Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier's Blood Soldier: The Winter's Wrath scheme
- Luna Snow's Mirae 2099 costume: Plasma Pulse scheme
- Magik's Punkchild costume: Rosy Resilience scheme
- Psylocke's Vengeance costume: Phantom Purple scheme
The developer has revealed in their official statement that this feature will expand to feature more costumes and release their corresponding schemes, for which players must first purchase the costumes via the in-game Store. Next, to customize the above-mentioned outfits (if owned), they can navigate to the Heroes menu tab and locate the Cosmetics section to change these heroes' costumes.
However, to customize these costumes, they will require a new in-game currency called Unstable Molecules, which will require "600 Unstable Molecules" for each scheme or recolor. As for how players can acquire Unstable Molecules, these can be exchanged with Lattice at a "1:1 rate," which notable contributor Miller Ross stated in a Twitter post that more ways to earn Unstable Molecules will be added in Season 3.
As for the players' reactions, many have sounded off on the need for another in-game currency on social media and the Marvel Rivals subreddit page. Regarding the latter, many posters have made comments such as "Gotta love currency bloat... No reason to not just be units,""If it's 1:1 [rate], why do we need another currency???," and "1:1 from Lattice pretty damn pricey though."
One poster asked, "Why not just make them worth units? Makes zero sense to add another currency. This is some crappy mobile game crap right here," to which one valid response alludes to how players could acquire Unstable Molecules, theorizing that we may earn them through the Battle Pass.
Either way, we'll have to wait for NetEase Games to respond to various concerns and criticisms from its player base regarding issues surrounding the new in-game currency and how it will be implemented in the next season for Marvel Rivals. Players can comment on this Twitter post to voice their opinions, as the developers have been praised for listening to player feedback and their rapid responses; an example is the competitive rank reset they rolled out recently.
