It will surprise no one to hear that yet another FPS game has added a battle royale mode. This time it’s team-based shooter Paladins jumping in on the trend, with the mode imaginatively titled “Battlegrounds”.
The new mode was announced at Hi-Rez Expo 2018, and possesses many notable similarities to the genre’s two current top dogs – PUBG and Fortnite. As is typical of the genre, 100 players will battle it out on a big map, with the field-of-play rapidly narrowing due to an encroaching fog. Players will roam this map in search of loot, while trying to come out on top in various skirmishes.
Paladins’ “unique twist” is that the game mode has been designed specifically to be played by teams of players, rather than the lone-wolf default favoured by PUBG and Fortnite. There is also an emphasis on class-based gameplay, carried over from Paladins’ standard game mode as an Overwatch-esque team FPS.
Battle royale fans are definitely being spoiled for choice.
