Hearthstone’s Journey To Un’Goro Is The Game’s Next Set


With the Year Of The Mammoth incoming – and set to make quite a few big changes to Hearthstone esports – we were all expecting the reveal of Blizzard’s card game’s next expansion pack. Well, here it is: Journey To Un’Goro.

While not all of the cards have been revealed just yet, there’s naturally a handful of interesting new things to consider with the new draws that Blizzard has announced so far.

The focus will be on more prehistoric cards and themes, but the big new feature is the addition of ‘Quests’, a new card mechanic that has players focus on a particular strategy throughout the entire match.

Quest cards will automatically appear in your hand at the start of the match – negating the frustration of finding a game-long quest card appearing in the later stages of a game – and will have objectives that, once completed, will provide the player with a reward.

The example that Blizzard provided was ‘Awaken the Makers’, a 1-Mana cost Priest card that requires players to summon seven Deathrattle cards over the course of the game.

Once completed, you’ll be rewarded with Amara, Warden of Hope – a complete game changer. Amara is a 5-Mana cost cost with 8/8 stats and the added benefit of setting your health to 40. Reaching this point in the game and playing Amara is likely to be a decisive victory for anyone.

While it might sound a little over-the-top, let’s not forget that this is only one example of the Quest cards. Undoubtedly there will be many more, and undoubtedly there will be a number of counters to each.

It’s an interesting idea and while we can’t yet envision the full scope of how it will affect Hearthstone competitive, it does at least give a tease of some of the new ways decks will be built around these features.

Alongside that Blizzard also announced a new group type, the Elemental. One example of this new type is Pyros, a phoenix-like card that as Deathrattle that places a stronger equivalent of the card into your hand. It begins as a 2-cost with 2/2 stats, then a 6-cost with 6/6 and finally a 10-cost with 10/10. A powerful addition to any deck, of course, and a good one to include for that Awaken the Makers quest.

Lastly there’s a new keyword ‘Adapt’, which allows a minion to improve itself in some fashion from a selection of choices. The example given was the Verdent Longneck, a card that – once played – uses its Adapt function.

It’s a 5-Mana cost Beast card with 5/4 stats that, once played, can make a choice from one of three random options from potential total of ten. Only six examples were given so far: ‘Deathrattle: Summon two 1/1 Plants’, ‘+3 Attack’, ‘Can’t be targeted by spells or Hero Powers’, ‘Divine Shield’, ‘Windfury’ or ‘Taunt’.

This gives these minions, as the name suggests, the ability to adapt to different threats, depending on the various situations and the status of the game.

That’s all there is to know about the Journey To Un’Goro Hearthstone expansion so far, but Blizzard promises more card reveals on 17 March 2017. The expansion pack itself will be released in early April.
