Fans of Spyro the Dragon have something to look forward to in 2023, as the beloved 1998 PlayStation video game protagonist may make a comeback. This news was first spotted by Insider Gaming, who reported on a surprise appearance by Spyro in a social media post by Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time developer, Toys For Bob on 10 January 2023.
According to Insider Gaming, the developer’s official Twitter account shared a collage image with the message, “Big moves and BIG MOOD for 2023 #LifeatTFB”. The image featured pictures of the development team, but two video games: Call of Duty and Spyro the Dragon, could also be spotted in the left-hand corners. Noteworthy, the latter title also featured the number "25" above it, prompting speculation of a 25th-anniversary comeback.
The last time Spyro appeared was in the 2018 PlayStation 4 and Xbox One title, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, a remastered edition of the original three Spyro games: Spyro the Dragon (1998), Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (1999), and Spyro: Year of the Dragon (2000), by developer Toys For Bob. This means it's been 25 years since the original Spyro game was released, corroborating fan speculation of a potential new Spyro game.
"Believe it or not, this is just another [piece of] evidence to confirm Spyro’s appearance in #CrashTeamRumble. [So] does that mean we won’t get anything else for our purple boy? No, I think we will be celebrating his 25th anniversary. As for Spyro 4, I don’t know about [that]," wrote user Dast14. Crash Team Rumble is a new multiplayer Crash Bandicoot spinoff unveiled at The Game Awards 2022.
Other users on Twitter are hoping for an announcement of Spyro 4, or even a remaster of the late 2000s The Legend of Spyro trilogy. "Please, I absolutely beg of you. I would give anything for Spyro 4 news for the anniversary," wrote one fan. "Please, please let these be a Spyro 4 announcement soon," wrote another.
It goes without saying that this latest tease has fans talking. And while the developer Toys For Bob have yet to provide any further (concrete) details, one thing is for sure, fans of Spyro the Dragon will be eagerly waiting for any other announcements. With Spyro’s 25th anniversary just around the corner, it’s clear that 2023 is shaping up to be a big year for the beloved dragon.
