Developer Hello Games continues to remain steadfast in supporting their open-world adventure game No Man's Sky as a new update is released. So far, the developer has released their first major content update in January 2025 with the Worlds II update, which introduced new biomes and terrains largely due to the new technology added to their game engine.
Their second major content update, Relics, launched for consoles and PC, which players can "turn" their "hand to paleontology" by discovering ancient bones that can be assembled into skeletons that can be utilized "to design fossil exhibits" and go face-to-face with stone guardians. The developer also released its accompanying patch notes detailing the new content, as well as all game adjustments and optimizations for the base game and the content update.
No Man's Sky's Relics update released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox consoles, Mac PCs, PC via Steam and Xbox Game Pass in which players dip their toes into the world of paleontology where they get to locate and collect "fossilized remains" which can be utilized in a variety of creative means. There is a wide range of remains that can be excavated from dig sites, including skulls, ribcages, various limbs, and "an assortment of tails and tailbones," and they may also find unique fossils, which may be of significant value.
As such, a newly introduced NPC specialist in this field can be found at space stations, and they can trade these fossils to acquire the ones missing from their collection. These Fossil Collectors will gladly engage in the art of haggling in order to get the best deal possible to add them to their collection and later utilize them to assemble larger-than-life exhibits.
Nevertheless, these "ancient bones" and unique fossils that can be unearthed at dig sites are quite guarded as there are new and dangerous stone enemies and even "titan worms" surrounding these locations, which must be dispatched. Once they've collected bones and fossils for their collection, they assemble them, of which there are "millions of possibilities for unique species" to uncover and display in exhibits, and signing up with the Galactic Palaeology Society allows them to embark on this new adventure and unearth hidden secrets that hadn't been found until now.
There is additional content to discover in the Relics update, such as finding fully operational upgrade stations within run-down space stations, valuable loot within salvage boxes, and more technologies to locate from "planetary buried caches." Purple star systems are much easier to find on the map, and new bone-based recipes to unlock which consuming these items could be beneficial to their overall health, provide unique "protective" properties, or be used for other related purposes, as completing the Relics expedition can reward players with a unique item.
