Marvel Studios’ latest series offering sees the Asgardian God of Mischief, Loki, returning for another outing in Loki Season 2 on Disney+. The series picks off where the first season left off as the multiverse begins to fracture as variants appear across multiple timelines with an ominous threat seeking to take advantage of this cataclysmic event.
The second season welcomes another Kang variant, Victor Timely, and while the character has a storied history in Marvel Comics, what can we expect from the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)? This explainer guide details the brief comic book and MCU history of Victory Timely, an inventor and industrialist appearing in Loki Season 2.
Loki Season 2: Kang Variant Victor Timely’s Comic Book Origins
Victor Timely is one of the most notable Kang variants in Marvel Comics, and Kang the Conqueror continues his centuries-long plan to defeat his enemies. While the heroes of Marvel Comics have continuously thwarted his plans, Timely is Kang’s most secret variant who debuted on the pages of Avengers Annual (1967) #21, where the villain, in defeat, traveled back in time and existed under a new pseudonym, Victor Timely.
He took on his new alias mainly due to the location Kang traveled to, Timely, Wisconsin, where it became central to him establishing himself as an inventor and industrialist. This town serves integral with this arc as Kang started building Chronopolis, but in a way that it was constructed out of sync with the flow of time with Timely, Wisconsin, making Chronopolis invisible and “undetectable” by everyone.
Kang eventually served as mayor of Timely, and during his run, he rekindled his relationship with Ravonna Renslayer while continuing his advancements in robotics and technology. But a more insidious plan was brewing as Kang was amassing large armies awaiting his conquest over Earth, which kickstarted the Kang Dynasty storyline in Avengers Annual (2001) #1.
Even after attempts to avert his forces, Kang had failsafes implemented, allowing him to assume control over the Sentinels deployed. Kang heavily depended on this variant’s descendant, Nathaniel Richards/Prime Kang, who played a massive role in indirectly aiding Kang in conquering Earth, but what can avid fans expect from Timely in his MCU appearance?
Loki Season 2: Kang Variant Victor Timely’s MCU Origins
Victor Timely is a Kang variant who officially appeared in the MCU in the post-credit scene for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. As was alluded to by He Who Remains, another Kang variant during Loki Season 1, there are multiple variants like himself across the multiverse; Victor Timely will be one Loki and Agent Mobius will be encountering in the show’s second season.
Not much is known about Timely’s activities until Loki and Agent Mobius catch up with him, but it’s apparent that Timely is working on something, and Miss Minutes is involved in those plans. While we know that Timely will have a significant role in the show, this season looks to be setting up the oncoming incursion of the timelines as Loki battles time-slipping between the past and present.
Apart from the post-credit scene and a handful of promotional trailers, it’s clear that Timely will be portrayed closely to its comic book origins as an inventor and industrialist, which will be explored in future episodes. Just how Timely will be positioned in the narrative for this season will be closely followed as this season can portray Timely vastly different from He Who Remains and Kang the Conqueror, especially with the events possibly setting up Avengers: Kang Dynasty.
Sylvie’s actions in killing He Who Remains will have massive consequences as her actions resulted in other Kang variants, like Victor Timely, unknowingly succeeding Kang’s plans. But we don’t know if Timely is aware of them and whether we could see more Kang variants or the Council of Kangs as the timelines continue to wreak havoc.
New episodes of Loki Season 2 are released every Thursday at 6 pm PT and 1 am UTC / 2 am BST on Friday on Disney+. Loki Season 1 is available to stream.
