Avengers will get to assemble one last time as developer Crystal Dynamics confirmed that the action-adventure game Marvel's Avengers has reached the end of its lifespan. This comes following years of reported technical difficulties and internal problems, culminating in changing the guard at the studio.
Not long ago, we reported that notable industry source Miller Ross detailed that the studio was looking to cease future development on the superhero game, with final support rumored to arrive in 2023. Crystal Dynamics has since confirmed this as they outlined plans for the game's development across the next few months, with the game officially "sunsetting" in September 2023.
The end was inevitable for Marvel's Avengers game which had been plagued by various technical issues, from networking errors to severe bug glitches that deterred its player base from continuing the game. This also prevented bringing in new concurrent players, especially given the success of subsequent Marvel gaming releases, including Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Midnight Suns, and the mobile offering Marvel Snap.
According to a blog post on the official Marvel's Avengers game website, the studio wrote that there wouldn't be new game content or "features" arriving in the game, with development to be ceased on 30th September 2023. The game's single-player and multiplayer offerings will remain accessible to players; however, no in-game cosmetics will be added to the game's Marketplace from now on.
The game's 2.7 update, which included Bucky Barnes/The Winter Solider as a playable character and the Cloning Lab Omega-Level Threat challenge, is the last game content added to the game. This update arrived in-game on 29th November 2022, and the final game update, Update 2.8, is coming on 31st March 2023, which will feature quality-of-life improvements and disable certain in-game features.
This includes players no longer able to purchase Credits in-game, for which all balances will be converted into various resources which can be used in future activities. Nevertheless, following the Update 2.8 release, all items featured in the Marketplace, Challenge Card (the game's Battle Pass system), and the Shipment, including all character outfits, emotes, takedowns, and nameplates, will be available for free to all players.
Additionally, the Red Room Takeover event looks to continue its rotation cycle every two weeks for players to participate until 30th September 2023. After that date, the game will be removed across all gaming marketplace sites, including Steam, making it "no longer be available for purchase."
"We know this is disappointing news as everyone in our community has such a connection to these characters and their stories. We're so, so grateful that you came on this adventure with us. Your excitement for Marvel's Avengers – from your epic Photo Mode shots to your threads theorizing who our next Heroes would be, to your Twitch streams – has played a large part in bringing this game to life," the developer concluded.
