Subnautica developer Unknown Worlds has been relatively quiet since the announcement of Subnautica 2 in October 2024, which was accompanied by a teaser trailer. The game's reveal trailer highlights the new underwater worlds, its gorgeous lighting, and terrifying creatures that reside on the ocean's floor; we finally gained a first look into the upcoming exploration survival game in the first Developer Vlog.

The developer launched its Developer Vlog series on the official Subnautica YouTube channel this week, in which its first video discusses what players can expect from the game. Additionally, they've teased the game's release window by confirming the game will be heading to Early Access first, based on the Developer Vlog's title description.

Unknown Worlds' first Developer Vlog, titled "Road to Early Access," hosted by Design Lead Anthony Gallegos, guided players through their first "in-development footage" of Subnautica 2, which featured key details on our upcoming "underwater survival adventures." Subnautica 2 has based its development on everything they've learned from working on Subnautica and Below Zero, including player feedback, to provide a fresh yet new gaming experience for "new and returning players" solo or in its new co-op mode.

The game is set in a brand new yet equally "mysterious alien world" where their "underwater survival adventures" will lead them to discover new and diverse biomes to descend into the depths of this world. Additionally, they'll have access to a few new equipment items, vehicles, and craftables to help them along in their journey, as this may help them when encountering menacing leviathans during their explorations.

Luckily for players, they'll be able to experience some of the new content in Subnautica 2 when it launches through Steam's Early Access and Xbox Game Preview this year; however, a release date has not been announced. It remains unclear how long the game will remain in Early Access, as the first Subnautica game spent three years in Early Access before its official 1.0 launch in January 2018.
