Epic Games hosted their State of Unreal Event at this year's Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, California, as the keynote event opened with a massive reveal. The Black Panther and Captain America action-adventure game from Skydance New Media and Marvel Entertainment received its first official reveal with a new Story Trailer and its official game title, 1943: Rise of Hydra, from writer/director Amy Hennig.

The Story Trailer provided audiences with a preview of the upcoming game set during World War II and showcased the incredible effects of the Unreal Engine utilized in-game. Hennig, revered for her work on Naughty Dog's Uncharted series, announced in 2019 that her studio falls under the Skydance New Media, which also has a Star Wars project currently in development.

The game was first announced at Disney's D23 Expo's Games Showcase, in which a teaser trailer accompanied the announcement for this "globe-trotting adventure." According to the D23 Expo 2022 announcement post from Marvel Entertainment, 1943: Rise of Hydra, "which marks the first initiative from the new AAA game studio, features an original story that will take players on a WWII-era adventure with four playable heroes at different points in the story."

The "four playable heroes" with whom players will experience the game are "a young Steve Rogers, aka Captain America; Azzuri, T'Challa's grandfather and the WWII-era Black Panther; Gabriel Jones, a U.S. soldier and member of the Howling Commandos; and Nanali, leader of the fledgling Wakandan Spy Network." Players will immerse themselves in a visually stunning yet gritty environment inspired by iconic locales from Marvel comics, films, and TV shows during a world ravaged by war.

Along with Hennig, Marvel confirmed that Grammy Award-winning composer Stephen Barton will write an original score for the game, which players will remember his work recently for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Apex Legends, and Titanfall. We also received a release window, as the game will arrive sometime in 2025; however, details on which platforms it will launch were not revealed.
