ALGS: How Does the Legend BAN System Work?

The ALGS is undergoing a few changes for Year 5, including the addition of a new Legends BAN system.
ALGS: How Does the Legend BAN System Work?

With ALGS Year 4 Championships all wrapped up, Year 5 is now underway with some significant changes for the competitive Apex Legends scene. The first S-Tier tournament of the year starts on May 1, 2025 with the ALGS Open.

This LAN marks not only the largest in Apex history, but will see 160 teams battle it out for a $1 million prize pool in New Orleans, USA. For the competing players, however, it will be the first time the Legends BAN system will be used on LAN, opening up even more avenues for match strategies.

The idea behind the Legends BAN System is to encourage a wider variety of Legends to be used during matches, encouraging players to diversify their skills across the Legend roster. All Legends will be available for selection during the first match of a series. After that, things start to switch up:

  • After each match, the Legend that was picked by the most teams is removed from the pool of available Legends for the rest of the series.
  • If a whole class of Legends is removed during the series (i.e Assault, Skirmisher, Recon, Support, Controller), the Legend that has been banned the longest will return to the pool
  • The Legends BAN System will be used across the Pro League, Pro League Qualifier, Last Chance Qualifier, and all three LAN events - the first being the ALGS Open.

The benefit of the new system is that players and fans may get to see how some lesser used Legends can be used in competitive play. It may also inspire teams to get more tactical with their initial picks during early games, such as not starting out with say Valkyrie or Bangalore in the team in order to attempt to save them for later matches.
