WWE 2K24 Teases Long Requested Match Type

The floodgates are opening, and WWE Games continues to hype upcoming WWE 2K24 reveals. Everything kicked off with speculation about the WWE 2K24 cover star reveal, but the latest teaser is bringing to mind one of the most requested match types in recent years. On top of that, the latest WWE 2K24 teaser included a date and our first clear indication of when some reveals could arrive.

WWE 2K24 could bring back Special Guest Referee match type

After first fueling speculation about the WWE 2K24 cover star, WWE Games followed up yesterday by posting the image seen above. The sleeveless referee shirt features the WWE 2K24 logo, and the tweet itself notably tagged WWE Hall of Famer "Stone Cold" Steve Austin.

Fans have been clamoring to see the Special Guest Referee match type back in the franchise for years, and it looks like that wish is finally coming true. Special Guest Referee was last seen in some versions of WWE 2K17 and before that in WWE 2K14 as well as other classic titles, but it's one that has been missing in recent years. Tagging Steve Austin only fuels the speculation, as The Texas Rattlesnake has been a Special Guest Referee or Special Guest Enforcer several times throughout his career.

The teaser, as well as a follow-up featuring Rhea Ripley, included "1.22.24" as a sign that more news should land on Monday, January 22, 2024. The Ripley tweet shows her in a backstage gym area with the WWE 2K24 logo on a television in the background, so we could also be seeing a new backstage brawl area or match type on the way.

While there's a chance they hold off until a reveal during WWE Raw on Monday, WWE Games could start making formal announcements earlier in the day ahead of that show. Either way, fans can rejoice that WWE 2K24 news is already on the way.
