Netflix has confirmed that the next installment of the popular K-drama series Squid Game is on its way to the streaming platform. The original series, written and directed by Hwang Dong-Hyuk, was favorably received, smashing Netflix's all-time streaming records and casting it into global internet stardom.
Notably, Squid Game Season 2 is still in its early stages of development, meaning the release date and story plot are still largely under wraps. Fortunately, Netflix has provided some details on what eager fans can expect.
When will Squid Game Season 2 be released on Netflix?
As mentioned earlier, Squid Game Season 2 is still in development, and no release date has been confirmed. Therefore, we remain doubtful that the next season of Squid Game will air this year. With that said, a more likely release date is before Q3 2023.

Interestingly, the first season took 12 years to bring to life; yet, within 12 days, it became the most popular series in Netflix's history. Therefore, if there's any indication that some things are worth waiting for, it's Squid Game.
What is the plot for Squid Game Season 2?
According to executive producer Kim Ji-Yeon, the script for Squid Game Season 2 is not yet complete. "We are working on the script right now and making the form of the story," said Ji-Yeon to Tudum. In this regard, fans will unlikely return to the dreaded games any time this year.
"But there's definitely a lot of pressure on how to make [Squid Game Season 2] even better. I know that a lot of the different fans and audiences have enjoyed the series very much, but really we're focusing on how to make it even more joyful to the global audience," Ji-Yeon added.
For the uninitiated, Squid Game follows a group of deeply indebted citizens who attempt to gamble their way out of poverty by playing brutal (deadly) versions of several children's games. Followingly, the show sees challengers gradually killed off until only one winner remains.
It is safe to assume that Squid Game Season 2 will largely mimic the storyline of Season 1, presumably with several new (and familiar) faces. In a statement to Tudum, Dong-Hyuk confirmed that Gi-hun, the winner in the first season of Squid Game, will return with The Front Man and another new character.
Interestingly, the killer animatronic doll Young-hee is "officially off the market" and will be replaced by its boyfriend, Cheol-Su. Similarly, the mysterious salesman, better known as "the man in the suit with ddakji," might also make a comeback.
That's everything we know about Squid Game Season 2 at this time. We will endeavor to provide further updates as more information becomes available.
