It seems the world can't get over the marvelous anime series Cowboy Bebop. More recently, a tabletop role-playing game based on the show has raised over $350,000 on Kickstarter, making it one of the top-funded projects on the platform this year.
Developed by Mana Project Studios and Don't Panic Games, the fundraising campaign goal was much lower than the currently pledged donations. Both companies initially only needed $20,000, but with over a week left on the Kickstarter campaign, over 3,000 individuals have raised over a quarter of a million dollars in funds.
Titled Cowboy Bebop Roleplaying Game, the tabletop RPG is an Italian project that features two language variations: English and Italian. In addition, there will be a French version of the game through a separate crowdfunding campaign in 2023. Although that note was posted before the companies reached such massive funding, it might be coming sooner than most think, possibly without another crowdfunding campaign.
That said, Cowboy Bebop Roleplaying Game features a structure that is paired with narratives. Players will take turns telling various tales and elaborating on how the game results reflect in these narratives. This element affects players' decision-making and ultimately influences the story moving forward.
All players except one individual will take the role of Bounty Hunter. Each of these Bounty Hunters has a Character sheet describing their character and a set of rules specific to that character. Players will use these rules to play the game, making decisions about how their characters act, think and feel. Will these characters capture the bounty, or will they take their side? That’s for the Bounty Hunter to decide.
The single player who isn't a Bounty Hunter takes the role of the Big Shot. The Big Shot is in charge of the setting, the environment, and of every character other than the ones of the players. So while the Bounty Hunters should bring their characters to life through actions and decisions, the Big Shot should set these decisions up, presenting interesting situations with difficult choices.
From the description of the game alone, it seems almost like a mix of sorts between Dungeons & Dragons and Cowboy Bebop but features most, if not all, of the narrative from the anime series. The Cowboy Bebop Roleplaying Game will likely require multiple players for it to be fun, but with the right group, it seems it'll be a tremendously enjoyable time.
