The King of Fighters fans might be anticipating the newest entry in the franchise, XV, but for old-school veterans, '98 still can't be topped.
Featuring every character up to KOF '97, KOF '98 Ultimate Match Final Edition, released in 2008, is the definitive way to experience the classic fighter, with SNK revealing brand-new features to modernise it.
Much to the surprise of fans, Ultimate Match will be getting tons of new online features, including an improved netcode, lobbies, and more. So let's break down everything you need to know.
KOF '98 gets rollback netcode
As we've mentioned, one of the most exciting new improvements KOF '98 will receive is rollback netcode, specifically the one implemented by Code Mystics, a company dedicated to updating retro titles with functional online capabilities.
Online lobbies and ranked
With a functional netcode in place, SNK will also populate KOF '98 with a plethora of online modes, including:
- Ranked matches
- Player matches
- Online lobbies
Of course, those looking for an offline-only experience can try out new modes such as Endless, Challenge, and Pract.
KOF 98' balance changes
Much to the dismay of purists, the new update will also bring balance changes to the game. What that entails is yet to be seen, but it'll most likely involve slight tweaks to individual characters.
Luckily, the original NEOGEO version can still be accessed by those who purchase Ultimate Match.
KOF 98' rollback netcode beta
SNK also revealed the dates for the upcoming beta starting this upcoming 29th November at 5:00 pm PST/1:00 am BST, ending on 3rd December at the same times.
You can purchase The King Of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match Final Edition on Steam.
