Are you left frustrated trying to build a house in The Front? Trust me — I get it. FloppySword's new open-world survival shooter does not give much aid, leaving you in the dark on pretty much everything. And that includes building your first shelter to protect your character from the elements.

Understandably, certain elements of The Front's gameplay might be a bit barebones. After all, the game is still in Early Access, in which case we can be slightly forgiving. That said, if it's learning how to craft door frames or window panes you're after — we've got you covered.

How To Build A Shelter In The Front Game

As it turns out, building a house in The Front is relatively straightforward. Well, that is, once you get the hang of it. For simplicity, we won't go into super nitty-gritty detail on how to build advanced structures. We'll leave that to you to figure out.

To build a basic shelter in The Front game, follow these steps. All materials are available from the native Crafting menu (accessible via the Tab key).

Step 1: Set up a foundation

The first step to building a home in The Front is to craft a Wood Foundation. This structure will serve as the base upon which other structures will be created. It requires 10x Wood and 5x Fiber, which you can easily forage from nearby trees and shrubs in the vicinity.

Step 2: Set up walls and stairs

Depending on the incline of the foundation, you'll need to craft Wood Stairs. Obviously, you'll want to place the stairs where you'd like the house's entrance to go. Next, craft a couple of Wood Walls. Each wall will cost you 7x Wood and 3x Fiber.

Place the walls around the perimeter of the foundation —  but take note of Step 3 before you do this if you'd like to craft windows and a door in The Front.

Pro Tip: It's important that you choose the 1x1 version and not the 2x2, as the larger wall structure does not currently provide the option to place wooden door frames or window panes.

Step 3: Crafting doors and windows

This step stubbed me when I first built my house in The Front. Before you can place your door or window, you'll need to craft a frame for them. Select the Wood Wall — then press and hold the right mouse button. Next, select one of the following options:

  • Wood Door Frame
  • Wood Window Frame

It's worth mentioning that there are several other structures available from this submenu. For example, you can also craft Half Walls, Open Walls, Tri Walls, and Vertex Walls.

Step 4: Place door and windows

With the frames in place, you can craft the Wood Single Door (5x Wood, 2x Fiber) and Wood Window for your shelter in The Front.

Pro Tip: Made a mistake and need to remove a structure? No problem. To delete any structure, simply move toward it. Then, press and hold the F key. Select "Delete" and wait a moment to undo the build — note that you will not recover your spent resources!

Step 5: Build a roof

What's a house in The Front if it doesn't have a roof? Am I right? To complete your beautiful structure, you'll need to craft a Wood Roof. This only costs 7x Wood and 3x Fiber per panel. Place the roof panels on top of the walls to complete your newly built home.

You might need to place Tri Walls to build the gable part of the roof (the triangular section of a wall between the edges of a sloping roof). And that's pretty much everything to know about how to build the basic shelter in The Front. Do you like my house? I think it's really cool.

We'll leave it to you to build more advanced structures — for example, you can create a deck or upper level to your home using the Wood Floor, or you could make a wall and gate around your home to protect yourself from the dangers lurking in the open world.
