Star Wars Jedi: Survivor lead Cameron Monaghan recently expressed his desire to portray the Star Wars character for a live-action project. The actor has portrayed Cal Kestis in two video games, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor, both developed by Respawn Entertainment, the latter game receiving a GRAMMY award for Video Game Score.
These comments came about during the actor's appearance at a panel at FanExpo Vancouver 2024 during the weekend of 17th and 19th February 2024 where he was asked if he would be onboard to portray the Jedi hero in live-action. The character had previously been speculated to appear in multiple Star Wars projects; however, that has yet to materialize as of writing.
A fan asked the American actor, who previously had roles in Shameless and Gotham, whether Cal's appearance in live-action has been meaningful for the character rather than just for fan service. While he had had some "interest" in crossing over from video games into live-action, he has yet to confirm whether he has been approached or if it's currently in the pipeline.
Monaghan commented in a transcript from The Direct, "It would have to be right. By that, I mean it has to continue the story or the character in some way. I don't want him to just kind of show up to stand around and be there. I want him to mean something and for there to be a significance for the character itself. So, it would have to make sense. But in the right context, then, yeah, absolutely."
As the actor has been highly against having Cal Kestis appear on-screen just for fan service, he wants to give the character a satisfying conclusion to the games should this opportunity be proposed. While there were rumors of him making an appearance in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series back in 2022, the young Jedi Master didn't show up, leaving fans slightly disappointed.
Despite the actor's interest in seeing Cal Kestis appear in live-action, with him reprising the role, fans are likely to see the titular hero soon. Game director Stig Asmussen commented in an interview with IGN that the Jedi game series has been envisioned to be a trilogy which is likely attributed to the games' success; however, he further stated that it won't be easy for the team at Respawn due to the multiple "proprietary" projects they currently have in development.
