Developer Rare is still putting together the final preparations for their biggest launch to date for their action-adventure game Sea of Thieves. The game heading to PlayStation 5 consoles in April 2024 is celebrating yet another incredible milestone with some Grog to mark the occasion.
Following the recent Closed Beta testing, the game has now seen 40 million pirates traverse the Sea of Thieves for glory, honor, and, yes, Gold. The game first launched for Xbox One consoles and Windows PC in March 2018, becoming one of a few Xbox-exclusive titles to launch through the Xbox Game Pass subscription service.
Since its release, Sea of Thieves has released 11 Seasons, which brought unique gameplay features, new cosmetics, events, and more lore and worldbuilding, enriching the world of Sea of Thieves. The game's developer has also partnered with popular IPs for crossover events like Banjo-Kazooie, Pirates of the Caribbean, Monkey Island, and Borderlands, adding new quests, themed cosmetics, and characters in-game.
According to a statement from the developer, the milestone wouldn't have been possible without the players "who continue to surprise and impress us with your creativity and antics out on the waves." As they thanked the development team "who've worked so hard to deliver over a hundred free updates since launch," they noted that they're eagerly excited to expand their community and welcome new players to the game.
The developer announced in February 2024 that Sea of Thieves is heading to PlayStation 5 consoles, which will launch on 30th April 2024. The game, which had its Closed Beta test from 12th to 15th April 2024, expressed their excitement following the beta as they anticipate "even more fresh faces to arrive starting next week.
Sea of Thieves is still available for pre-orders via the PlayStation Store as interested players can choose between one of three game editions: Standard, Deluxe, or Premium Editions, with a pre-order bonus to be claimed at launch. These game editions are also available for Xbox consoles and PC for Windows and Steam as the PlayStation 5 launch will coincide with Sea of Thieves' upcoming Season 12 release.
