Spinel is a new currency in Resident Evil 4, which you can use to trade items from the merchant. As the merchant so atrociously mentions, "there are some things money can't buy," you can use Spinel to buy exclusive items that are not available to purchase via gold coins. 

These items include new weapons, weapon accessories, crafting materials, treasures, and more. Completing requests is the best way to farm Spinel though you may also stumble upon them in the wild. Some zombie knights, who you encounter in the castle, also drop Spinel. 

Since Spinel is hard to come by, we recommend saving them for something that you truly need. 

The merchant continuously adds new items to his stock, so make sure to stop by and check the "trade" option to see what new items he's willing to trade for these precious Spinels.
