San Diego Comic-Con 2024 has kicked off with full force as attendees from around the world arrive at the San Diego Convention Centre for the annual multi-genre celebration. With the first day wrapped up and plenty of news hitting mainstream publications, one announcement by Nintendo and LEGO captured the hearts of Mario fans globally.
Major toy manufacturer LEGO unveiled several new toy sets based on popular IPs, including Dungeons & Dragons, Minecraft, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Star Wars, which were on display on the first day of SCC 2024. Another toy set they revealed is the newest addition to a collaboration with Nintendo, themed on characters and worlds from the Mario franchise, welcoming the next character in 2D brick form.
The Mario & Yoshi set was on display at the LEGO showroom at SDCC 2024, adding the adorable fictional dinosaur Yoshi, which, according to an official statement from Nintendo, is a "homage to his earliest appearance, carrying Mario into adventure." The latest set is in honor of one of the most iconic Mario gaming entries, Super Mario World, for which the set's visuals are a call back to the game's pixelated designs.
According to LEGO Super Mario Senior Designer Carl Merriam, when explaining the set's overall design process, they wanted to "capture the original sprite animation from Super Mario World. This meant re-creating the pixel art in LEGO bricks and then adding a mechanism to make Yoshi run with Caped Mario riding on his back."
The design team took it a step further with the pixelated Yoshi figurine, which has a unique feature designed and built, which will delight prospective buyers and Yoshi fans, as mentioned by Merriam. "AND if that wasn't enough fun, we also added a dial to make Yoshi's tongue pop in and out—just like in the game!"
The Mario & Yoshi set is one of a handful announced by Nintendo and LEGO as part of the ongoing LEGO Super Mario line and the 'Adults Welcome' series. LEGO intends to reignite "fond memories" of "builders" playing the Super Mario World game from their childhood; the Mario & Yoshi set is now available for pre-order from the LEGO website as of 25th July 2024 before it hits the markets from 1st October 2024 from their website and selected retailers globally.
