We're less than two months away from the Nintendo Direct presentation, which will focus on the upcoming console, the Nintendo Switch 2, which will likely confirm a handful of exclusives and third-party releases. It's already confirmed that the Switch 2 console is to be backward compatible with the Nintendo Switch Online service and various Switch games upon its release.
Speaking of Switch games, some of the ways that players could add games to their library was by redeeming Nintendo Game Vouchers, and the same could be said for My Nintendo Gold Points. However, Nintendo has announced updates regarding Nintendo Game Vouchers and My Nintendo Gold Points and their availability for the Switch 2 console.
Nintendo updated their webpages for the Nintendo Game Vouchers and My Nintendo Gold Points features concerning the Nintendo Switch 2 console. As players could purchase Nintendo Game Vouchers from the Nintendo eShop if they have a Switch Online subscription and use it to redeem against Switch games, Nintendo confirmed that it will not be applicable to redeem against Switch 2 games.
"Regarding Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games, please note that Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers cannot be redeemed for Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games,"the official statement reads. While it does mean that players can still use them for Switch games, especially if they're backward compatible with the Switch 2; however, the same can't be said for the My Nintendo Gold Points feature.
According to an update on the My Nintendo Gold Points webpage, players can no longer earn Gold Points by buying games and other "digital content" starting from 24th March 2025 at 9:30 pm PDT / 12 am ET / 5 am UTC on 25th March 2025. There are certain exceptions, however, as players can earn Gold Points through pre-orders before the aforementioned date regardless of whether payment is processed at a later date, at which time they'll earn Gold Points.
Players can also earn Gold Points on physical game editions, which are released "on or before" the aforementioned date, even if they purchase the games after 24th March 2025. "Note that Gold Points can only be earned for physical games within one year of the game’s original release date, and physical versions of games released after 24th March 2025 will not qualify for Gold Points," Nintendo clarified.
Lastly, Nintendo has stated that players can earn Gold Points "on purchases made at the Nintendo New York store through 24th March 2025." It's worth noting that players can use their Gold Points after the aforementioned date as they're valid for 12 months on "the last day of the month" after earning them as players "will be able to use them normally" after it's discontinued.
They won't be able to earn them when making "purchases using balances from Nintendo eShop cards" following this date in which Nintendo has noted that certain retailers will still sell eShop cards "that disclose earning Gold Points" but "will not earn Gold Points when using the cards for purchases." Nevertheless, players can still earn Platinum Points following the Gold Points discontinuation, which can be earned for "using various services or as a prize for certain promotions or tournaments" and can be redeemed for fun rewards that require Platinum Points.
