Marvel Snap developer Second Dinner launched yet another new game mode, the Sanctum Showdown, as the "Brave New World" season nears its end. This mystical game mode has Snappers vying for points from Sanctum locations to progress their ranking and earn Scrolls and Charms, the latter of which can be used to acquire new cards.
One card available from the mode's Sanctum Shop is Gorgon, which, with a bit of RNG luck, may add the card to their collection, so is this powerful swordsman worth getting? This guide addressed this question by looking at the character card's ability, how Snappers can acquire it, its best synergies, top counters, and a few deck ideas to inspire Snappers when building Gorgon decks in Marvel Snap.
Marvel Snap Gorgon Card Abilities Explained
As one of Marvel Comics' most powerful swordsmen, Tomi Shishido / Gorgon had a difficult childhood, not only being a prodigy through the accomplishments he achieved at a young age but discovering his power to turn people into stone just by looking at them. By the time he was 18 years old, his family and friends were murdered by him as his initiation for The Hand before he turned the blade on himself before he split from the ninja order, and now he's joining the ranks in Marvel Snap.
With Gorgon now available to acquire in Marvel Snap, the card was officially released as a Series 4 card with its stat line of two-Cost and three Power. The card has an Ongoing ability, which states that any card/s that didn't start from their opponent's deck will cost one more Power.
This card synergizes well with Darkhawk decks and cards that give opponents cards like Korg, Master Mold, Rock Slide, Black Widow, and Mobius M. Mobius. However, as an Ongoing card, Gorgon can be countered by Echo, Quinjet, Rogue, Red Guardian, and Enchantress and, in some cases, playing Grandmaster at Red Guardian or Enchantress' location or using Mystique (to copy Echo or Quinjet's ability) or Absorbing Man (to copy Red Guardian or Enchantress' ability).
Snappers looking to add Gorgon to their collection can acquire the card by spending 1,200 Charms on the Portal Pull and hoping the RNG gods are on their side. But if their luck weren't on their side, Gorgon would appear in the Token Shop as a Series 4 card on 13th March 2025 for 3,000 Collector's Tokens.
Best Marvel Snap Gorgon Decks: Dark Moon Rocks
With all this information in mind, let's focus on Gorgon's most synergistic decks, the Darkhawk and Ronan deck archetypes, which gained a slight buff due to the releases on Victoria Hand and Moonstone, respectively. As the main objective is to fill their opponent's hand with cards to power Darkhawk, playing specific cards to give them more cards prevents important ones from entering their hand.
Marvel Snap content creator ReZ Snapper provided a new iteration of a Darkhawk/Ronan deck by pairing key cards with Darkhawk and Ronan to ensure their opponent is fed unwanted cards to their hand or deck. This is done by playing Korg, Master Mold, and Rockslide, and they can also play Grandmaster on one of these cards to trigger their ability once again.
Additionally, they'll have Zabu to discount their four-Cost cards, Cassandra Nova to steal Power from cards in their opponent's deck, and Captain Marvel to swing a location in their favor when the game ends. With Moonstone's addition, they can play Gorgon at its location, where they can play either Darkhawk or Ronan and then copy their ability with Mystique in the Moonstone location to double the copied ability.
Best Marvel Snap Gorgon Decks: Staring At Doom!
If their opponents are creating cards if running a Discard deck or a S.H.I.E.L.D. deck (Agent 13, Maria Hill, Agent Coulson, Nick Fury) with the Collector, Gorgon is a viable counter to these deck archetypes. Snappers can capitalize on Gorgon's ability and run an Ongoing deck with a few supporting cards to counter almost anything their opponent may throw in their way.
This doomed deck from Marvel Snap content creator DenHearthstone is a slight variation on the Ongoing Doom 2099, in which Snappers can set up potential playlines with Ant-Man and Gorgon while playing Sam Wilson / Captain America and Captain America in adjacent locations to move Cap's Shield between the two cards.
Depending on how the last few turns will play out, hold off playing Doom 2099 until Psylocke, Gorgon, and MMM are played to have enough energy before Doom 2099 is on board. There is a likelihood that either Doctor Doom or Spectrum will be the last card played, but they can play Blue Marvel instead if a suitable location is more appealing for this card to be played.
Best Marvel Snap Gorgon Decks: The NovaHawks
Gorgon is also a good counter to Arishem decks and can be inserted into Anti-Arishem decks to prevent those cards from being played. Also, factoring Mobius M. Mobius (MMM) and Cassandra Nova, who is also a fantastic counter to Arishem, will work well, especially given Gorgon will be changed in the next OTA, which will target their opponent's created cards likely in their hand.
In this case, we'll spotlight an Anti-Arishem deck from Marvel Snap content creator Alexander Coccia, which also works if the aim is to create cards for their opponent, with slight changes to include Gorgon and MMM, which already featured Cassandra Nova. The cards we'll be swapping out are Thena and Copycat to make space for Gorgon and MMM, with the deck mostly remaining the same.
If playing on curve, the early turns could see Kitty Pryde, Angela, and Ravonna Renslayer playing, with the latter helping discount cards with one and less Power. This should make playing Gorgon or MMM and then Cassandra Nova and Sage viable for the next turns, which alternatively Darkhawk can be played Turn 5 for Mystique and Iron Man or Sage for the final turn play and hopefully a victory in your pocket!
