Last weekend, Second Dinner's card battler game, Marvel Snap, got caught in the crossfire as it was unceremoniously banned in the United States, catching many US-based Snappers and content creators off-guard. The ban came following ByteDance's video-sharing app, TikTok, which was banned in the country where ByteDance is the owner of Marvel Snap's publisher, Nuverse.
An official statement was posted on their Discord server and Twitter account; the developer stated that the development team is "working around the clock" to restore the game's services on the app stores in the country and, as such, will update all players on this development. It's important to note that this only impacts US-based Snappers, as those outside the US can continue "to play with no issues."
Marvel Snap is one of a few owned IPs that was banned in the US following TikTok's ban in the country, which Second Dinner stated that it caught the entire team off-guard. The card battler game isn't available on the app stores in the US; which the developer said on their Discord server that "this outage is a surprise to us and wasn't planned," and as such, the game "isn't going anywhere" as they're "working on getting the game up as soon as possible" with updates to follow.
Previously, it remained unknown if Marvel Snap would be the exception to the recent TikTok ban; however, the video-sharing app was restored almost 24 hours following its ban. It's almost guaranteed that Marvel Snap's services will be restored to the app stores soon, and we await new updates from the developer in the next few hours.
Since then, the developer has provided a string of updates posted to their Discord server and Twitter account, which, as of writing, the game is still offline and unavailable in the US. Firstly, the developer will compensate "all players" for "lost time" as they're missing time completing daily, Season Pass and Bonus Challenge missions and claiming their free credits and other rewards.
As mentioned before, it's unclear when Marvel Snap's game services will be restored, in which compensation is likely to be issued once the game is back online. Additionally, the developer has encouraged affected Snappers to follow Marvel Snap content creators and streamers on Twitch and YouTube for those "itching for a continued dose of SNAP" and, of course, to support their content and the SNAP community.
As Second Dinner continues to work behind the scenes to restore the game in the US, we will continue providing additional reporting and updates as soon as they're made available. In the meantime, they can support fellow Marvel Snap content creators and streamers on Twitch and YouTube and engage with the SNAP community, as the next card release is expected to launch on 21st January 2025, following the weekly reset.
