The action rolls along in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 with Epic Games constantly changing the battle royale state of play. This season has been all about throwbacks with some fan-favorite items unvaulted since the new split began.
A new update just went live and marks the return of the Rail Gun, Recon Scanner, and more. Check out all the details here for the Fortnite v20.40 hotfix now live in Chapter 3 Season 2.
Fortnite v20.40 hotfix - Rail Gun and Recon Scanner unvaulted
After being vaulted previously due to their severely overpowered status, the Rail Gun and Recon Scanner have been unvaulted as part of the v20.40 May 24 hotfix.

Since these weapons are only being included via a temporary hotfix, there will not be NPC-dedicated locations to unlock them. Rather, players can find both the Rail Gun and Recon Scanner in Chests and on the ground in Chapter 3 Season 2.
Fortnite Balloons are back - Chapter 3 Season 2
After featuring in a Donation Station trial period in which players could vote for which item they wanted to be unvaulted, Balloons are back in Fortnite as part of the v20.40 hotfix. Players can find Balloons in Chests, Rare Chests, Floor Loot, as well as in Supply Drops. But do note that Balloons are rare loot so they won't be popping out of every chest you find.
Balloons can be used up to three at a time with various effects depending on the number in use. Though Fortnite Balloons only last for a brief period of time, so you won't be able to float forever.
Here are the guidelines for using Balloons in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2.
- One Balloon – Slightly reduces gravity, negates fall damage
- Two Balloons – Increases gravity reduction, negates fall damage (more than with 1 Balloon)
- Three Balloons – Player is lifted into the air (you can fly for a brief period), negates fall damage
That covers everything for the Fortnite v20.40 hotfix, enjoy the unvaulted classic content in the new era of Fortnite battle royale!
