As each week passes by and the Civilization 7 release date draws near, there has been a slow trickle of announcements about the game's different leaders and civs. With a separation between the two for the first time, Civ 7 breaks things up between the Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern Age. All prior reveals had focused on the Antiquity or Exploration Age, but Mexico has become the first Modern Age civ confirmed for Civilization 7.

One of the biggest mysteries so far about Civilization 7 has been exactly what options players will have in the Modern Age. With different civs on deck for each of Civ 7's three unique eras, there's been plenty of fan speculation and glimpses of ones we know should be revealed at a later date.

Glimpses from gameplay footage had already quietly revealed Buganda, France, Meiji Japan, and Mughal India, but none of these has been officially announced by Firaxis Games. Instead, the first official Modern Age reveal focuses on the cultural powerhouse of Mexico.

With this announcement, a total of 22 civs have been confirmed across all three ages. The Antiquity Age has 10 confirmed civilizations, the Exploration Age has 11 confirmed civilizations, and the Modern Age has just one confirmed but four others discovered with official details expected in the coming weeks.

As for what players will be able to do, Mexico is a cultural and diplomatic civ. Their unique government type Revolución will let players gain a huge amount of Culture during Celebrations, but this will be your only possible Government type.

Mexico has a handful of civic trees to take advantage of that can bolster military strength, give a huge diplomatic advantage, or continue to bolster cultural gains. Mexico also has a unique quarter (Zócalo) and two unique buildings (Catedral & Portal de Mercaderes) that primarily gain culture, but the buildings can also score a happiness or gold bonus.

Players will also have several unique Revolucionario units to make use of featuring iconic figures like Antonio López de Santa Anna and Pancho Villa. There will also be one associated wonder for Mexico, and it fits their cultural power. The Palacio de Bellas Artes can be built to increase happiness and provide Great Works slots.

There will be multiple paths in Civ 7, but the best fit based on current reveals would likely be using Pachacuti as a leader. Players looking for a path that has historical roots could go start with Maya, choose the Inca in the Exploration Age, and finally become Mexico in the Modern Age. Of course, there will be plenty more to consider by the time Civilization 7 is released worldwide.
