Ukrainian developer GSC Game World and major gaming brand and publisher Xbox have produced a feature-length documentary into the studio's challenging development process for their upcoming first-person shooter (FPS) game, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. The documentary follows the team amidst the game's development, which turned into "a deeply personal and historical endeavor" with war breaking out in their native Ukraine.
With around 500 employees working on different aspects of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, they have to face this grim world with an advancing "war on their doorstep," the documentary titled “War Game: The Making of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2” places the spotlight on the studio's "game development in a collapsing world to personal and collective resilience & overcoming loss." According to IMDb, Andrew Stephan, who produced the Power On: The Story of Xbox documentary miniseries, is credited as director for “War Game: The Making of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2,” which is available to watch on the GSC Game World and Xbox's YouTube channels.
According to an official statement from Stephan, “This film isn’t just about the hardest game development of all time. It’s about resilience and the unyielding human spirit in the face of unimaginable challenges. It’s about the importance of creation in a time of destruction…a defiant act of making something meaningful in the face of adversity.”
As several team members juggle and balance their lives "as creators and survivors," S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2's development went from an exciting project years in the making to become "a powerful symbol of resistance." To this day, the team continues to work on the game, which had to delay its release multiple times for specific reasons, from addressing technical issues hampering the game to the team's relocation to the Czech Republic in the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Following multiple delays, the previous release date for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl was on 5th September 2024 for PC via Epic Games Store, GOG and Steam and Xbox Series X|S before needing more time to resolve “unexpected anomalies,” pushing its release to 20th November 2024. It will also be available via the Xbox Game Pass subscription service on the same day which players can still pre-order their copy for either its physical or digital editions; the latter includes the base game and a Season Pass exclusively for the Digital Ultimate Edition.
