Early last month, we revealed that Ubisoft was working on its first-ever "play-to-earn" AAA non-fungible token (NFT) game and have been exploring blockchain technology since early in the technology's development. Now, Ubisoft has come clean and announced that NFTs (called "Digits") are headed to Ghost Recon Breakpoint in the form of unique, collectable in-game cosmetics.
According to Ubisoft, Digits range from "in-game vehicles to weapons through pieces of equipment" and are limited to Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint Ubisoft Connect players. Digits will be available in limited supply and will form part of an Edition collection.
Beyond this, the developers also revealed their independent platform called Ubisoft Quartz, where players can acquire and trade Digits.
NFTs in Ghost Recon Breakpoint
"Ubisoft Quartz is a new experience available to our players, built upon our vision of creating an ever-greater connection between you and the game worlds you love," said Ubisoft on its Quartz website.
The company further noted that each Digit would feature a unique serial number stored within its metadata, which other players can see in-game. Also, the Quartz platform will keep track of current and prior holders of the Digit, "making players an integral part of the game's history."
"With Digits, items are no longer bound to a player's game inventory since they can be put on sale for other eligible players to acquire outside of the Ubisoft ecosystem," Ubisoft noted. Moreover, each Edition will only be issued once, creating an exclusive experience for players.
If you're wondering whether Digits will affect gameplay performance, don't worry -- they won't since they are "purely cosmetic items."
Ubisoft Digits are built on Tezos blockchain, built on a "proof of stake" model, making it less energy-intensive than Ethereum or Bitcoin-based blockchains, which are based on a "proof of work."
Digits will be available for purchase via Ubisoft Quartz starting from 9th December at 1 pm ET in the United States and Canada and Brazil, Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Australia at 1 pm local time.
Early adopters will also benefit from free Digit drops on 9th December and again on 12th and 15th December, although only eligible Ghost Recon Breakpoint players will receive them.
