Sea of Stars has been announced as officially launching on PlayStation Plus Game Catalog on release, with a demo officially available on the service as of today.
The game will also be launching on Xbox Game Pass day one, meaning you can experience the RPG on either platform free of any additional charge. A demo has been available on these platforms for a while now, but this is the first appearance of any demo on the PlayStation platform.
According to an official PlayStation Blog post, part of the reason for releasing a demo on PlayStation is so that people can get a taste of how important traversal is to the game, stating:
"Too often, we have fought epic monsters only to have then go out of our way to reach the next objective because a fallen tree was blocking the way. With Sea of Stars, we set out to move as far away from tile-based movement as possible to create something that would feel lighter and more seamless, while allowing for a more varied moveset, and in turn, offer more opportunities for players to interact with the environment during their adventures. We wanted exploration to be as fully fleshed out as combat."
Sea of Stars is currently scheduled to launch on August 29th amid a packed month for RPGs. The game is described as a 'retro-inspired turn-based RPG' and is a prequel set in the same universe as The Messenger which was a retro sidescrolling metroidvania title released in 2018. The game was first announced in March 2020 and was a Kickstarter project. The game will also be available on Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and PC alongside the aforementioned PlayStation release.
