When Phantom Blade Zero was first announced, excitement buzzed as fans eagerly awaited more details to see if the game could live up to the jaw-dropping spectacle of its reveal trailer. Now, with the release of its first gameplay trailer, it’s clear there was little to worry about. Not only does the game look stunning, but it also appears poised to raise the bar for single-player action RPGs in recent years. Let’s dive into the details!

Phantom Blade Zero Trailer Showcases Boss Fight and New Weapons for the Year of the Snake

Phantom Blade Zero has just dropped its first gameplay trailer (embedded below), and it’s nothing short of jaw-dropping. While many have drawn comparisons to Black Myth: Wukong, given that both games share an Eastern-themed action adventure with some Soulslike influences, I believe Phantom Blade Zero has a lot more to offer.

This boss fight features the classic multi-enemy, one-ruler style, but elevates it with tight combos, intelligent enemy AI, and strategic positioning. (Picture: S-GAMES)

The trailer, titled The Year of the Snake trailer, showcases a thrilling boss fight against the Chief Disciple of the Seven Stars. This multi-phase encounter has you juggling multiple enemies attacking in a beautiful sequence, all while trying to take down the leader of the troupe, Decree.

Phase one is a breathtaking spectacle. So much happening at once with enemies attacking in coordinated, flowing sequences. The choreography is influenced by classic Hong Kong martial arts films from the 1980s and 1990s, combining finesse with a stunning visual flair. The combat looks fast (faster than the first trailer) and each move seems perfectly timed to create both a graceful and intense atmosphere.

The second phase intensifies with both music and boss design, as the leader is puppeteered with stilted yet cleanly telegraphed attacks and a wider range of moves. (Picture: S-GAMES)

Phase two ramps things up even more. The music transitions from classical Chinese influences to a powerful mix of melodic Eastern riffs and heavy metal (which is an absolute banger, by the way). The enemy troupe, now reduced to just three members, positions themselves at elevated points, attaching red threads to Decree, effectively reviving and puppet-mastering him. This changes the fight into a 1v1, with the protagonist going head-to-head with a resurrected, stronger version of Decree.

What stands out about this fight is how much it allows the combat system to shine. The focus on a singular enemy in phase two allows the player to get into the rhythm of the battle, with Decree unleashing a variety of melee, ranged, and rush attacks. He’s no pushover, and the fight requires skill, quick thinking, and precision. All hallmarks of a well-crafted boss encounter.

Phantom Blade Zero Gameplay Trailer New Weapons
The trailer also showcased some stunning weapons that I can't wait to try out when the game releases. (Picture: S-GAMES)

Once we’ve caught our breath, the trailer reveals new weapons, including the White Python longsword and the Red Viper shortsword, which work together to provide a balance between offense and defense. But the real standout is the Venomous Softblade - a flexible weapon that can be used to counter enemy attacks, adding another layer of strategy to the combat.

The trailer also introduces new Phantom Edges (your special secondary weapons). The Savage Axe is capable of charging up to deal massive Sha-Chi damage, while the mysterious Ink Cut might be a key item in the game that the developers are keeping under wraps. From what we can gather, it also seems to have some in-game utility, though we don’t have all the details just yet.

While we don’t know if all the bosses and weapons will carry this same level of technicality and flair, judging by what we've seen so far, it’s safe to say Phantom Blade Zero is shaping up to be an absolute blast to play. It’s definitely on my must-play list for release. We still don’t have an official release date, but you can bet we’ll be keeping a close eye on this one and updating you as soon as we know when Phantom Blade Zero will hit the market.
