The Nintendo Direct: September 2021 showcase shocked fans when Japanese game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, announced that a brand-new animated Mario movie would be coming our way in December next year.
In addition to this, Nintendo revealed that several A-list Hollywood stars would be voicing our most beloved characters from the Mushroom Kingdom. Chris Pratt and Charlie Day will be headlining Mario and Luigi, respectively, which are arguably the most beloved characters in all of popular video game culture.
The announcement could not come at any better time for video game enthusiasts either, since the new Mario movie marks one of several upcoming game-based movies slated for release between now and next year, including Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City, Uncharted, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Borderlands movies.
What is the cast of the new Mario movie?
Nintendo also made some interesting choices for their upcoming animated movie, many of whom are fairly recognizable from other Hollywood animated blockbuster films.
Here is the full cast of the new Mario movie:
- Mario is voiced by Chris Pratt
- Luigi is voiced by Charlie Day
- Peach is voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy
- Bowser is voiced by Jack Black
- Donkey Kong is voiced by Seth Rogen
- Toad is voiced by Keegan-Michael Key
- Cranky Kong is voiced by Fred Armisen
- Kamek is voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson
- Spike is voiced by Sebastian Maniscalco
There will also be surprise cameos from Charles Martinet, the original voice of our favourite Italian plumber in the Super Mario video game series since the 1990s.
According to producers of the Mario movie, each Hollywood star was selected for their ability to capture the unique spirit of their iconic characters.
"We are collaborating with Chris and his experienced team to not just create a character licensed film, but a new piece of entertainment which brings Super Mario Bros. to life on the screen, and allows everyone to enjoy whether or not they know about the game," said Shigeru Miyamoto.
While there is certainly much excitement in their air, Miyamoto urged fans to "wait just a little longer for the premiere." The new Mario movie will debut in the United States on 21st December 2022 before rolling out in other regions across the world over the holiday season.
