Horizon Forbidden West, the long-awaited sequel to 2017's Horizon Zero Dawn, was one of several delayed PlayStation exclusive releases at the end of last year. Fortunately, however, the game is nearly within our grasp.
The upcoming action RPG from Guerrilla Games sets to improve upon every aspect of its predecessor, with recent gameplay trailers exposing several notable and obvious differences.
For example, Horizon Forbidden West boasts more of everything, including more machines to fight, more weapons to use, more armours to unlock, and more quests to complete. The game also has a remarkably larger open-world than Zero Dawn.
So, naturally, many fans must be wondering how the playtime compared to the original game. Fortunately, we have some idea of how long it may take to beat Horizon Forbidden West.
Horizon Forbidden West game length
Horizon Zero Dawn was a meaty experience in itself, with the main story taking about 20-22 hours to finish. Coupled with major side quests and hunting ground trials, it takes over 45-50 hours to beat Horizon Zero Dawn. For completionists, the number goes up and beyond 60 hours.
In comparison, Horizon Forbidden West features a much larger and denser open-world experience. There is also the new arena challenges (presumably an alternative to hunting ground trials) that are replayable and add some extra hours to the game.
All of this should make Horizon Forbidden West a meaty experience. Moreover, if the game director's, Mathijs de Jonge, recent comments are any indication, that should indeed be the case.
Jonge discussed Horizon Forbidden West's game length with the German website, GamePro, noting that the game is "about as long as its predecessor."
This means players hoping to focus solely on completing the main quests in Horizon Forbidden West should expect a playtime of 20-25 hours. Indeed, this duration is common among Sony's recent first-party games, like Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us 2.
Beyond the main story, it seems Horizon Forbidden West will offer more content than its predecessors, presumably leading to more playtime. While the exact numbers aren't known at the moment, players could expect to sink 50-60 hours for a wholesome experience.
