PlayStation's first-party studio, Housemarque, surprised fans with a new announcement revealed during the State of Play presentation on 12th February 2025. The Finnish developer revealed a cinematic trailer for their next IP, which evolved the studio's award-winning strategy of developing games with "deep third-person action and mysterious storytelling."
Building on the success of Returnal, Housemarque announced their latest game, SAROS, a forthcoming action game in which the developer confirmed an extended gameplay reveal for SAROS, which is arriving later this year. But players will have to wait a while to dive into Housemarque's upcoming game, as it has been given a 2026 release window as of writing.
SAROS is Housemarque's forthcoming gaming release, showcased in a stunning cinematic trailer at the PlayStation State of Play presentation. The studio's Creative Director, Gregory Louden, provided additional details about SAROS in a post for PlayStation Blog in which players explore the game's "haunting story haunting story of a lost off-world colony on Carcosa under an ominous eclipse" through the eyes of its protagonist, Arjun Devraj.
The character embarks on a daunting quest in the pursuit to find what he's looking for, but what that something is has yet to be determined as Louden states that the studio's main goal with SAROS is to "create an emotional and powerful character study that explores the cost it takes to create a new future."
However, the protagonist isn't alone in this "lost off-world colony," as many threats are looking to prevent Arjun from finding what he's looking for; not even death can stop him. According to Louden, this is what makes SAROS distinctively different from Returnal, which is "permanent resources and progression making every death valuable."
"After every death, you will face a changed world, but in Saros, you will be able to choose and permanently upgrade your loadout from an evolving set of weapons and suit upgrades to come back stronger to overcome the challenges you face on Carcosa," Louden added. As mentioned, players will have to wait until 2026 for the game's release, which exclusively launches for PlayStation 5 consoles, including PS5 Pro, with more details to follow in the coming months.
