On 11 November 2022, acclaimed Finnish game developer Remedy Entertainment officially announced that they would co-develop and co-publish Control 2 with Milan-based publisher 505 Games. The game (previously referred to as Codename Heron) is a sequel to the critically acclaimed action-adventure game Control, released in 2019 and will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC.
Accordingly, the co-publishing agreement will see Remedy publish Control 2 for the PC platform and 505 Games for PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Currently, the project is in the early "concept stage" but will be built using Remedy's proprietary Northlight engine and toolkit.
Per the company's official announcement, "Control 2’s initial development budget amounts to EUR 50 million, and Remedy will retain the ownership of the game’s intellectual property." Furthermore, all future revenues generated from the game's launch, including development, marketing, and post-launch investments, "will be equally split between 505 Games and Remedy."
This news comes after the company first communicated plans to "develop a multiplayer spin-off game of Control [Project Condor]" via a press release in June last year. Accordingly, Remedy hinted that a "bigger-budget Control-game" would follow discussions with 505 Games around "high-level collaboration terms to further expand the Control franchise."
However, following this latest announcement, we know that this "bigger-budget" game is indeed Control 2. "I’m now proud to confirm that the bigger-budget Control game, also known as Codename Heron, is Control 2, a full-blown sequel to our award-winning game Control,” said Remedy CEO Tero Virtala.
Since launching in 2019, Control has been nominated for 11 BAFTA Games Awards and received over 20 “Game of the Year” awards, including IGN’s 2019 Game of the Year. The game also sold over 3 million copies, with Control 2 expected to continue the success story of its predecessor.
"We are excited to deepen our cooperation with Remedy and continue the success story of Control together [...] Control is the biggest investment 505 Games has ever made, so it has a special place in our hearts. We are grateful to the whole player community that has made Control such a long-lasting and loved game, and are even more excited to bring out Control 2," said Rami and Raffi Galante, co-CEOs of 505 Games.
There is no official release date for Control 2 as it is currently in the early concept stage. However, the game is confirmed to launch on Windows PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. We will endeavor to update you regarding any further developments.
