The Big Apple rolled out the red carpet as developers, studios, and industry leaders within the gaming industry were in attendance at the annual New York Game Awards (NYGA). This year's nominees across 15 categories covering AAA and independent releases, console, mobile, and AR/VR gaming also saw Remedy Entertainment's Sam Lake being honored with the Andrew Yoon Legend Award for his prolific influence and impact on the industry in his two decades with the Finnish studio.
Aside from Sam Lake, some of the night's winners included FromSoftware's Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree expansion and Studio Zero's Metaphor: ReFantazio. The night's top honor was awarded its recipient for its "outstanding achievement" in 2024, which was won by Team Asobi's platform adventure Astro Bot.
The jury is officially out, as some of the best gaming releases of 2024 were honored at the New York Game Awards (NYGA) on 21st January 2025 (h/t GamesIndustry.biz). As mentioned before, Astro Bot took home the top prize for Game of the Year (GOTY) and two other awards, Best Kids Game and Best Music in a Game, while another GOTY contender, Metaphor: ReFantazio, took home the accolade for its achievement in writing for a video game release.
Another strong GOTY contender, FromSoftware's Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, picked up two awards during the ceremony for Best DLC and Best World, which the latter is to be expected due to how vastly designed the DLC's map was (it's huge). While Balatro may have been snubbed, indie games were spotlighted as Mossmouth's UFO 50 was recognized for its excellence as an independent gaming release, while Mouthwashing took home the honor for Best Hidden Gem.
The New York Game Awards, presented by The New York Videogame Critics, serves as the association's annual fundraising event for its Playing with Purpose writing programs. This program provides their students with the necessary tools and knowledge to help them pursue a career within the video games industry.
