American cable network HBO released a new preview trailer, giving its audience a sneak peek at the forthcoming original series arriving on its streaming service, Max. The trailer featured shows scheduled to arrive later this year and the first official looks for upcoming releases in 2025, including the much-anticipated second season of The Last of Us.
The footage revealed in the preview trailer is our first and official look into the upcoming season, which has yet to confirm a premiere date as of writing. While the series was perhaps the trailer's focal point, it gave audiences a closer look at a few key moments from the upcoming season that have many eagerly excited for The Last of Us' second season, sparking much discussion online.
HBO's latest trailer, which shared a few scenes from the upcoming season, which will arrive in 2025, previewed The Last of Us Season 2. The second season will pick up events following the first season's conclusion, which confirms the implications of the lie Joel (Pedro Pascal) had said to Ellie (Bella Ramsey), straining their relationship throughout the season.
The segment, which starts at the 1:16 time mark, also gave us the first look at a few characters set to debut in the show's second season, including Isabela Merced (Dina), Kaitlyn Dever (Abby Anderson), and Jeffrey Wright (Isaac Dixon), the latter who is reprising his role from the video games. Another character seen in the segment, portrayed by Catherine O'Hara and yet to be confirmed by the network, appears either compelling to have Joel admit or come to terms with his prior actions, confronting Joel with the line "Did you hurt her?"
While it's confirmed that a handful of moments from The Last of Us 2 will be adapted for the second season, the second game will be adapted for multiple seasons, according to a Deadline interview with showrunner Craig Mazin. "We don't think that we're going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we're taking our time and go down interesting pathways, which we did a little bit in Season 1, too."
"We feel like it's almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4." This was further reiterated by Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann, who added, "As Craig mentioned, there's quite a bit of material there that we're taking our time with, and we're looking at each piece individually to make sure it's got its own arc, its own journey that the characters go on, but there is a grander plan that ties all the seasons together."
