Star Wars Outlaws is Ubisoft's brand new Star Wars game that the studio announced recently. The game focuses not on Jedi or Sith, as we've seen with a lot of recent Star Wars games such as Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, but instead on the criminal underworld of Star Wars.
This means that you'll be facing against less magic space wizards and more scumbags that have guns and are just looking to survive. You'll be able to travel seamlessly from ground to space and take part in both on-foot battles and space battles.
10th April 2024 Update: We've updated this page to confirm that Star Wars Outlaws is slated to release on 30th August 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The original reporting continues below.
Star Wars Outlaws Release Window
Star Wars Outlaws was confirmed for release on 30th August 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, according to the official Story trailer that dropped on 9th April 2024. This is the same studio that developed multiple Ubisoft titles, including Tom Clancy's The Division and Division 2, Far Cry 3, Assassin's Creed Revelations, and recently Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
Star Wars Outlaws Gameplay
Star Wars Outlaws seems to focus almost entirely on gunplay and cover-based shooting in combat. Your character, Kay Vess, comes from an era when blasters were common and the primary form of communication, especially in the criminal subset of Star Wars.
From the sounds of it, you'll be able to upgrade your skills throughout the game to give yourself more of an edge in combat, and you'll be able to use your tiny alien companion, Nix, to distract enemies, help you out in combat or grab you items that'll make your life easier. There are also flight and driving sections featured in the Gameplay trailer below, showing how you can pilot a speeder bike around the world and later showing that you can take your starship from ground to space (seemingly seamlessly) before blasting away TIE Fighters and other enemy ships in the depths of space.
When Is Star Wars Outlaws Set?
Star Wars: Outlaws is set between Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi. This means that we'll be playing through an extremely dark period in Galactic history after Han Solo is encased in carbonite and Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, and the rest of the Rebel Alliance are on the back foot against the Empire.
This also means that the Empire is either about to start building the second Death Star or is currently building it. Crime is also at a high, thanks to the Empire no longer focusing on keeping perceived order throughout the galaxy (as was their purported aim, though we all know that isn't true at all), which means that syndicates are able to do whatever they want.
Interestingly, thanks to the game's time setting and the focus on the criminal element of Star Wars, there's some crossover with the Star Wars comics. Beloved Star Wars character Doctor Aphra, who originated in the comics, could show up as she's also part of the Star Wars criminal underworld. There's also the potential to discuss the impact of the Crimson Reign Star Wars crossover, which featured Han Solo's ex-girlfriend Qi'ra deciding to take on the Empire.
