This article outlines everything we know so far about Resident Evil 9, from release date speculation to all the info from leaks and rumors, story, setting, the possible hero, and more, so let's get started.

Please note: The information should be taken with a grain of salt, as it is currently based on Resident Evil 9 leaks. Images inside are from RE7 and RE Village until such time as official RE8 images become available. We will consistently update this article to bring you the latest information and speculation.

Resident Evil 9 Release Date Speculation

There is no exact Resident Evil 9 release date at the time of writing, but we will update this section as soon as Capcom confirms one. In fact, Capcom has not officially announced Resident Evil 9, but it does feel like a sure thing following the success of Village and the RE4 Remake.

Credible leaker and Resident Evil expert Dusk Golem, who has a great track record when it comes to all things horror games, has previously stated that Resident Evil 9 has been in development since late 2018.

Further, the leaker "cannot see it [RE8] release before 2024." This gives us a broad release date window of possibly 2024. A 2024 release date window for RE8 would then mean a six-year development cycle, which definitely isn't out of the question.

Resident Evil 9 Platforms?

Again, there is no indication of which platforms Resident Evil 9 will appear on. We do believe it will release on both PC and consoles. Further, since the Resident Evil 4 Remake, which looks fantastic, was still on previous-gen consoles (PS4 and Xbox One), there might be a slight chance that RE9 will be as well. However, since the release date will likely not be before 2024, maybe we will see RE9 leave the previous console generations behind.

Resident Evil 9 Story & Setting Leaks

According to leaks, the Resident Evil 9 story has something to do about the "ninth moon phase". The setting is said to be a "ghost town" in Western America, with the timeline of the Resident Evil story unknown at this point. 

Players will have to face deformed creatures, which is a given at this point. Mentions have been made of Wendigos, but this is all pure speculation and rumors. 

Resident Evil 9 FPS View & Engine?

While nothing has been confirmed just yet, we believe that Capcom will continue the first-person view perspective for Resident Evil 9, despite the Resident Evil 4 Remake doing very well.

In terms of the engine, there is no indication that Capcom would use anything but the RE Engine, which has been a staple since Resident Evil 7, offering fantastic atmosphere, gore, and enemy movement. 

Hero of Resident Evil 9? Who is the Protagonist?

Following the events of Resident Evil 8 (Village), we definitely won't see Ethan Winters as the hero/protagonist in Resident Evil 9 Apocalypse. Capcom's Kento Kinoshita even said that the Shadows of Rose DLC for RE Village is meant to "conclude the Winters family saga," so Rose will likely not be the hero either.

We speculate that a series mainstay, Chris Redfield, or possibly Leon Kennedy, might be the protagonist for Resident Evil 9, or Capcom could, of course, introduce a completely new character as they did with Ethan in RE7.
