The Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, or Pokémon TCG Pocket, has been downloaded over 30 million times worldwide, The Pokémon Company announced today. Developed by Creatures, Inc. and DeNA Co., Ltd, the mobile app allows players to open virtual booster packs, battle against others online, and work to complete their Pokédex in a free-to-start game.
While Pokémon TCG Pocket does feature microtransactions, and a Premium Pass to purchase, players a fully able to enjoy the game without dropping a single penny. Each free player can open two booster packs per-day, and more if they have enough additional items to speed up the process.
The app has been a way for Pokémon TCG fans and new players alike to get stuck into the card game on the go, learning the rules, and collecting cards with some stunning artwork. It does, however, follow a simpler ruleset from the traditional TCG. For example:
- Decks are made of 20 cards and no more than two cards with the same name can be included in a deck.
- Each player can only have up to ten cards in their hand, rather than an unlimited hand size.
- Cards have no Resistance and have a Weakness modifier of +20 instead of ×2.
It was recently revealed that Pokémon TCG Pocket had already grossed over $12 million in just the four days following its launch. The game hit iOS and Android devices worldwide on October 30, though New Zealand saw a soft launch back on September 26.
