Team GO Rocket Leaders are enemy battles that can be challenging for Trainers to overcome in Pokémon GO; however, it can be rewarding. Defeating Arlo, Cliff, and Sierra will lead to the showdown with their boss, Giovanni, but before that, you'll need to go head-to-head with each leader.
Preparing for the battle with Arlo will heavily depend on the combination of Shadow Pokémon he'll use, but we've made this encounter a little easier for you. This guide details Arlo's current line-up and the best counters, including Pokémon, their typing, and attacks to use against him in Pokémon GO.
2nd November 2023 Update: This guide reflects the new Pokémon lineup and possible counters when encountering Team GO Rocket leader Arlo in battling encounters during Pokémon GO's Season of Adventures Abound. The original reporting continues below.
Pokémon GO Team GO Rocket Leader Arlo: Current Line-Up & Counters
Team GO Rocket Leader Arlo's line-up hasn't changed following the recent Rising Shdaows event, which introduced Shadow Raids in-game. While he and all Team GO Rocket Leaders and their boss, Giovanni, have Shadow Pokémon included in his line-up, Trainers will need to adjust their line-up to fit the best possible counters.
Below is the current Shadow Pokémon line-up for Team GO Rocket Leader Arlo for November 2023, with all data supplied by notable Pokémon source, PokémonGOHub:
- Arlo Battle Phase 1: Bellsprout
- Arlo Battle Phase 2: Alakazam / Mismagius / Sharpedo
- Arlo Battle Phase 3: Magnezone / Scizor / Snorlax
Best Bellsprout Counters:
As mentioned earlier, Arlo's current line-up has changed to reflect the new month, so you must best prepare for the fight. In the first phase, Arlo will bring out his Shadow Bellsprout, who's weak to Fire, Flying, Ice, and Psychic-type attacks, which can be used to counter its moveset:
- Alakazam (Psychic): Confusion (Fast Attack); Future Sight, Psychic (Charged Attack)
- Blaziken (Fire/Fighting): Fire Spin (Fast Atatck); Blast Burn, Overheat (Charged Attack)
- Charizard (Fire/Flying): Fire Spin (Fast Atatck); Blast Burn, Overheat (Charged Attack)
- Mewtwo (Psychic): Confusion (Fast Attack); Psychic, Psystrike (Charged Attack)
- Rayquaza (Dragon/Flying): Air Slash (Fast Attack); Dragon Ascent, Hurricane (Charged Attack)
Best Alakazam, Mismagius & Sharpedo Counters:
For the next phase of this encounter, Arlo could either bring Alakazam, Mismagius, or Sharpedo for this battle. While Alakazam is weak to Bug, Dark, and Ghost-type attacks, Mismagius is also weak to Dark and Ghost types.
Additionally, Sharpedo is most vulnerable to attacks from Bug, Electric, Fairy, Fighting, and Grass Pokémon due to its Dark/Water dual typing. Hence, there will be a few counters shared between these Pokémon, especially for Alakazam and Mismagius.
- Chandelure (Ghost/Fire): Hex (Fast Attack); Poltergeist, Shadow Ball (Charged Attack)
- Confined Hoopa (Psychic/Ghost): Astonish (Fast Attack); Psychic, Shadow Ball (Charged Attack)
- Darkrai (Dark): Snarl (Fast Attack); Dark Pulse, Sludge Bomb (Charged Attack)
- Hydreigon (Dark/Dragon): Bite (Fast Attack); Brutal Swing, Dragon Pulse (Charged Attack)
- Tyranitar (Rock/Fighting): Smack Down (Fast Attack); Brutal Swing, Stone Edge (Charged Attack)
- Attack Forme Deoxys (Psychic): Zen Headbutt (Fast Attack); Thunderbolt. Psycho Boost (Charged Attack)
- Darkrai (Dark): Snarl (Fast Attack); Dark Pulse, Sludge Bomb (Charged Attack)
- Gengar (Ghost/Poison): Shadow Claw (Fast Attack); Shadow Ball (Charged Attack)
- Hydreigon (Dark/Dragon): Bite (Fast Attack); Brutal Swing, Dragon Pulse (Charged Attack)
- Tyranitar (Rock/Fighting): Smack Down (Fast Attack); Brutal Swing, Stone Edge (Charged Attack)
- Conkeldurr (Fighting): Counter (Fast Attack); Dynamic Punch, Stone Edge (Charged Attack)
- Lucario (Fighting/Steel): Counter (Fast Attack); Dynamic Punch, Shadow Ball (Charged Attack)
- Machamp (Fighting): Counter (Fast Attack); Cross Chop, Rock Slide (Charged Attack)
- Torterra (Grass/Ground): Razor Leaf (Fast Attack); Frenzy Plant, Solar Beam (Charged Attack)
- Vileplume (Grass/Poison): Razor Leaf (Fast Attack); Petal Blizzard, Solar Beam (Charged Attack)
Best Magnezone, Scizor & Snorlax Counters:
The final stage of this battle could see Arlo using either Magnezone, Scizor, or Snorlax to face off against your current line-up. Magnezone is vulnerable to Fighting and Fire types, Snorlax is weak to Fighting Pokémon, and Scizor is weak to Fire; this shouldn't trouble Trainers to find the right Pokémon to use against them.
- Golurk (Ground/Ghost): Mud Slap (Fast Attack); Dynamic Punch, Shadow Punch (Charged Attack)
- Rhydon (Ground/Rock): Mud Slap (Fast Attack); Stone Edge, Surf (Charged Attack)
- Rhyperior (Ground/Rock): Smack Down (Fast Attack); Rock Wrecker (Charged Attack)
- Stunfisk (Ground/Electric): Mud Shot (Fast Attack); Discharge, Mud Bomb (Charged Attack)
- Swampert (Water/Ground): Mud Shot (Fast Attack); Hydro Cannon (Charged Attack)
- Blaziken (Fire/Fighting): Fire Spin (Fast Attack); Blast Burn, Blaze Kick (Charged Attack)
- Charizard (Fire/Flying): Fire Spin (Fast Attack); Blast Burn, Overheat (Charged Attack)
- Entai (Fire/Steel): Fire Spin (Fast Attack); Flame Charge, Iron Head (Charged Attack)
- Flareon (Fire): Fire Spin (Fast Attack); Flamethrower, Overheat (Charged Attack)
- Infernape (Fire/Fighting): Fire Spin (Fast Attack); Blast Burn, Flamethrower (Charged Attack)
- Conkeldurr (Fighting): Counter (Fast Attack); Dynamic Punch, Stone Edge (Charged Attack)
- Lucario (Fighting/Steel): Counter (Fast Attack); Dynamic Punch, Shadow Ball (Charged Attack)
- Machamp (Fighting): Counter (Fast Attack); Cross Chop, Rock Slide (Charged Attack)
- Obstagoon (Dark/Normal): Counter (Fast Attack); Cross Chop, Hyper Beam (Charged Attack)
- Tyranitar (Rock/Fighting): Smack Down (Fast Attack); Brutal Swing, Stone Edge (Charged Attack)
- Ursaluna (Ground/Normal): Tackle (Fast Attack); High Horsepower, Ice Punch (Charged Attack)
Ultimately, Trainers can only bring as many Pokémon as they're allowed for their battle against Arlo; therefore, the best line-up must eliminate his entire line-up. The best line-up to bring for this encounter is Chandelure (Alakazam, Mismagius & Scizor), Blaziken (Bellsprout & Sharpedo), and Tyranitar (Magnezone & Snorlax).
