Season 12 of Overwatch 2 had a rocky start. While many of us were thrilled about the arrival of Clash mode, two new maps, and the introduction of Juno, the new support hero, there was also a sense of disappointment. Some players felt disappointed by the fact that only Reaper received a Mythic skin, along with other rare skins for more popular characters, leaving others overlooked.

Though it's understandable to voice concerns to the developers, some players crossed a line, resorting to targeted harassment towards Blizzard's team over their skin choices. In response, the Overwatch 2 community has rallied to defend the developers, hoping to de-escalate the situation and foster a more positive outcome.

Overwatch 2 Fans Denounce Targeted Harassment Towards Developers Over Skin Choices

As previously mentioned, fans were quite puzzled by the fact that Season 12 introduced new skins, all themed around Egyptian mythology, and chose to give the Mythic skin to Reaper while reserving other rare skins for popular heroes like Mercy, D.Va, Doomfist, Ana, and others. Meanwhile, characters like Ramattra and Venture, who would have been perfect for the theme, were left without any new skins at all.

In response to the outcry, Overwatch 2 Game Director Aaron Keller addressed the issue, revealing that Venture will be getting a new skin, but not until late 2024 or early 2025 at the earliest. This announcement seems to have been the final straw for many fans, who began to express their frustration more aggressively, directing their anger at the developers.

Overwatch Mythic Producer Cappugccino responded to the situation on social media, stating, “It takes an entire squad to make a Mythic, and even though I’m incredibly proud of the work we did on Anubis Reaper, I won’t be posting the dev roster. I’ve seen targeted harassment at our team members who have already posted, and I won’t be encouraging more of that.”

In response to this, Overwatch 2 players on Reddit began calling out those responsible for the targeted harassment, urging the community to disavow such behavior. “I think sometimes people need to remember there are people behind this game. It’s not EA or 2K with a yearly sports release. It’s a smaller team with their resources… people just need to chill out. The devs have made a lot of mistakes, but you’d be blind not to see that they’re trying,” one user said.

Another player added, “People [really] need to have sympathy. They just had layoffs a few months ago, so it’s [obviously] going to impact the game’s content pipeline for a while.” This comment was made in parallel to the fact that Season 12 introduced a significant amount of content beyond just skins, including Juno’s arrival and new maps, showing that Blizzard is working with a smaller team and still delivering high-quality content, even if it’s not exactly what players want.

Of course, we’re still in the early days of Season 12, and as time goes on, hopefully, the fanbase will settle down, and we can move past these unsavory situations. Both the Overwatch 2 community and the developers have valid points, but we must find a more respectful and balanced way to address concerns so that we can all work together to make Overwatch the best game it can be.
