Square Enix surprised many JRPG fans when they released the Octopath Traveler series for consoles. The announcement saw Octopath Traveler finally available for PlayStation consoles while its sequel launched for Xbox consoles.
Previously, the digital edition of Octopath Traveler was temporarily delisted from the Nintendo eShop earlier this year before reappearing sometime after that. This means the Octopath Traveler series is officially available for purchase and play across Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles and for PC as of June 2024.
Japanese developer and publisher Square Enix dropped a surprising announcement on 5th June 2024 in a company blog that the Octopath Traveler is available across "all console platforms." As mentioned before, Octopath Traveler is available for PS4 and 5 from the PlayStation Store, and its sequel can be purchased from the Xbox Store for Xbox One and Series X|S consoles.
But in a surprising move, Square Enix also announced that the Octopath Traveler series is now available through Xbox Game Pass and Game Pass for PC as Octopath Traveler 2 has launched for the subscription service. Both games can be downloaded to their Games Library with an active subscription regardless of the tier.
To commemorate the launch of the Octopath Traveler series for consoles, developer Team Asano has released a free update for Octopath Traveler on 5th June 2024. This update adds a new gameplay mode, Extra Battle, which lets players battle test their characters' skills and abilities against more challenging opponents, which will feature the main characters from the game.
The free update is available for consoles and PC, including Nintendo Switch, but players must ensure that the game is updated for the update to reflect. Lastly, PlayStation Plus members can receive a discount when purchasing Octopath Traveler, as they can get a "34% early purchase discount," but this expires on 20th June 2024.
