Netflix announced back in 2022 that it would be teaming up with Take-Two Interactive and 2K to produce and release a live adaptation of the popular first-person shooter series Bioshock. The film has since confirmed director Francis Lawrence helming the project, with Michael Green serving as a writer.
While it's been some time since the official announcement, the project was halted in May 2023 when the Writers Guide of America (WGA) went on strike following a labor dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). With an agreement reached between WGA and AMPTP in September 2023, Green shared some "optimistic" news in a recent interview.
Green, who's currently promoting his latest project, an animated series, Blue Eye Samurai for Netflix, spoke to Collider in an interview where he discussed the progress made following the WGA strikes. He shared that he has met with Lawrence, sharing that the writing team is eager to continue working on the scripts.
You have to measure your words, or you'll start to see a laser pointer at my forehead from the Netflix legal. Netflix has been amazing about it. They were excited about it before the strike; they're excited about it now, post-strike. Yes, I got called the, 'How's it coming along?' the minute the strike was over, 'You about ready…?' Been meeting regularly with Francis Lawrence and his team to refine a draft to go back in. We're all optimistic. We all love it. It's a great, big, sprawling nightmare world we wanna see real. So, here's hoping. I would love to have an update for you soon.
Green, who has received screenplay credits for Blade Runner 2049, Logan, American Gods, and A Haunting in Venice, the latter which was released in theatres in September 2023. Now one of the writers handling the live adaptation of Bioshock, fans of the gaming series are hoping that it remains faithful to the franchise and captures the pulse of what made Bioshock have one of the best storytelling in gaming to date.
