Creative director at NetherRealm Studios and Mortal Kombat 1 game director Ed Boon finally gave MK fans what they hoped to learn more about at San Diego Comic-Con last month. Many were anticipating news or an update regarding the status of the second Mortal Kombat film, which is reportedly expected to be released in 2025, according to Deadline, but this didn't occur.

Instead, the creative director took to social media this past week to finally provide an update on the forthcoming sequel in a rather unexpected way. Boon posted that he can share "Boon leaks" from the Mortal Kombat 2 film set by revealing the first look for a popular character set to appear in the film.

The royal princess of Edenia, Kitana, has been one of the franchise's most popular and revered characters and has appeared in multiple MK games since her debut in Mortal Kombat 3 in 1993. The character will be making a big splash on the big screens once more, as Boon shared a first-look image of her in the forthcoming Mortal Kombat film sequel.

On 1st August 2024, Boon took to his Twitter account to post an on-set image of the royal princess armed with her iconic steel fans and trademark blue palette. "I recently saw a (unfinished cut) screening of the Mortal Kombat 2 movie."

"During the screening, I broke into Todd Garner's phone, found this image from the film, and send it to my phone. I can leak stuff, too." Boon's caption refers to Mortal Kombat game information being leaked in the past, of which he took pleasure in leaking Kitana's on-screen appearance recently.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kitana's casting was confirmed in June 2023, when the film began production. Hong Kong-born actress Adeline Rudolph was revealed to be stepping into this role, joining a returning cast along with her Chilling Adventures of Sabrina co-star Tati Gabrielle and The Boys actor Karl Urban, who'll be playing another MK fan-favorite character, Johnny Cage.
