Mortal Kombat 2, the follow-up to 2021's video game adaptation, Mortal Kombat, is picking momentum with the bright lights of Hollywood spotlighting one of its characters set to appear. According to a social media post from producer Todd Garner, Mortal Kombat 2 completed its production in January 2024, in which the film's production was halted in July 2023 as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

As the film is still several months away from its current release window in October 2025, Warner Bros. Pictures released its first official image of Johnny Cage, who'll appear in Mortal Kombat 2. The character was first teased during the final moments of the first film with a movie poster seen; however, at the time, the character's casting wasn't confirmed.

Mortal Kombat 2 was one of the multiple productions impacted by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike before production resumed later that year and wrapped up more than a year ago. Since then, Netherrealm Studios co-founder Ed Boon has shared some updates on the upcoming sequel, including "leaking" an official image for Kitana, who'll be featured alongside returning characters.

Another character set to make a massive Hollywood splash in Mortal Kombat 2 is the video game series regular Johnny Cage, whose casting was confirmed in May 2023 to be portrayed by The Lord of the Rings and The Boys star Karl Urban. The film's official social media account released the first official image of Johnny Cage stylized as a Hollywood film poster of one of Cage's films, "Uncaged Fury," and a caption that reads, "It’s Johnny ******* Cage. Mortal Kombat II – coming soon only in theaters."

Mortal Kombat 2 is slated to release in theatres globally on 25th October 2025, and we can expect more news regarding the film's release in the coming months. It's worth mentioning that Ed Boon has recently teased a "future DLC" in a Twitter post following the release of Conan the Barbarian as the recent fighter included in the Khaos Reigns expansion.
