With Manor Lords now heading out to players via Early Access, one of the most critical steps to growing your settlement will be knowing how to upgrade a Burgage Plot. These a long term tasks that will require significant resource management, and there are several buildings you'll need to meet residential requirements.
If you want to score Development Points by increasing your Settlement Level, that's all going to be rooted in upgrading your Burgage Plots in Manor Lords. We've got more details below on all the resources and requirements to upgrade a Burgage Plot in Manor Lords and how to meet them.
How to Upgrade Burgage Plot to Level 2
Freshly built Burgage Plots start at Level 1, and you'll need to meet several requirements in order to upgrade it to Level 2. Before we get to the specifics, the most important thing is to pause Manor Lords any time you're looking to upgrade. Stop the flow of time frequently. If you've got time passing as you're checking houses to click upgrade, you could see one that had the proper supplies suddenly run out of one requirement seconds later by not pausing. When you pause, check every single potentially upgradeable Burgage Plot.
Sometimes the house that meets all the requirements at that moment isn't the one you were targeting. Fortunately, the base resources for your first improvement are fairly minimal as you need just 4 Timber to upgrade a Burgage Plot to Level 2. You also need to meet the following requirements:
- Water Access
- Church Level
- Fuel Stall Supply
- Food Stall Supply x2
- Clothing Stall Supply
You'll need to build a Well somewhat nearby connected to the road network to ensure Water Access, but they're low cost at just 1 Timber and you can build a few in different locations to speed up when families need to fetch water. Church Level requires at least a Wooden Church, and you only need a single one per region built with 5 Timber, 20 Planks, and 10 Stone.
Fuel Stall Supply is fulfilled by ensuring you have enough Firewood or Charcoal supplied at the Marketplace. Building an additional Woodcutter's Lodge with a family working there may help get another stall in place to supply more Burgage Plots. Clothing Stall Supply is most easily fulfilled early on with a Hunting Camp or Goat Shed providing Hides that a Tannery can turn into a Leather supply at the Marketplace.
Lastly, Food Stall Supply is often the most difficult to trigger. You need both an abundance and a variety of food options in the Marketplace. Berries, Meat, Bread, Eggs, Vegetables, Honey, and Apples all qualify. Berries can be easiest to procure early on, especially if you have a Rich Deposit, and a Chicken Coop or Vegetable Garden help diversify your food choices until you can sustain a large farm and regular Bread supply or unlock Honey or Apples upgrades.
How to Upgrade Burgage Plot to Level 3
Once you're ready to start upgrading a Burgage Plot to Level 3, your town should be significantly more advanced with greater resources to work with. For every single Burgage Plot upgrade, you need the following:
- 25 Gold, 4 Timber, 8 Planks, 4 Rooftiles
- Water Access
- Tavern Supply
- Church Level x2
- Fuel Stall Supply
- Food Stall Supply x3
- Clothing Stall Supply x2
For the pure resources, you'll need to use a Trading Post to garner the necessary Regional Wealth. Make sure you're stocked up on Planks from a Sawpit and Rooftiles via a Clay Mining Pit and Clay Furnace. Upgrade your Church Level by building a Small Stone Church, which will fulfill all the Burgage Plots in that region.
Diversify your food as mentioned above, you may want to lower or eliminate your Tithe percentage while looking to upgrade, as it deducts from your monthly food surplus and could make it hard to meet the Food Stall Supply requirements. Clothing Stall can be met by setting up a Cobbler's Workshop, Tailor's Workshop, or Weaver's Workshop (once you have a Wool supply with a Sheep Farm).
The last big hurdle is going to be Tavern Supply. It tends to be by far the trickiest to keep going, so you likely don't want to even staff your tavern, procure, or make Ale unless you're actively prepped to start upgrading Burgage Plots. When you have all the other requirements handled and the necessary resources saved up (or being regularly harvested), there are two paths to getting a good Tavern Supply.
If your population can sustain a good sized farm, grow Barley which can be converted into Malt at the Malthouse, and finally ensure you have a Brewery Extension built into one of your Burgage Plots. You need all those resources to come together to make Ale, and then a worker at the Tavern to distribute it to your town in Manor Lords.
The alternative that cuts some of this process out if you're excelling in other areas is to use the Trading Post to offset several steps. If you have a good amount of Regional Wealth, just make a Trade Route for Ale and import it for your Tavern to supply to the town. If you wanna save a little money and do a bit more of the work yourself, you can import Malt to be used at your Brewery, or import Barley as a base crop and process it at the Malthouse. In all cases, be sure to turn off the regular import once the upgrades are finished if you need the Regional Wealth for other purposes.
As mentioned above, pause frequently when looking to upgrade. Tavern Supply, as well as the many Marketplace Requirements, can be a bit fickle and appear or disappear from houses based on distance and timing. Noticing how this fluxes takes a little getting used to, but you'll be upgrading Burgage Plots regularly in Manor Lords before you know it.
