The Last Of Us fans, rejoice - it sounds like another season of the show might already be over the horizon, even before the debut of the first one in late January 2023.
The Last Of Us series director Neil Druckmann hinted heavily at a new Last of Us Part 3 in a January 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, mentioning that he thinks there is "more story to tell" for the franchise.
While Druckmann was unable to confirm the existence of an official release date for a Part III, it seems from his comment that one could be coming, especially since he confirmed earlier this year that an outline for Last Of Us Part III had been fully written.
The outline, which has not been released to the public, allegedly outlines all of the events that would occur after the events of The Last Of Us Part II.
The Last Of Us Part II was a gut-wrenching story that was so intense that Druckmann allegedly released death threats for his writing choices, suggesting that Part III could be equally controversial among fans.
Druckmann implied that if he were to release a third season of the show, its plot would not veer from the games by Naughty Dog, and would instead be a truly faithful adaptation to the source.
“We have no plans to tell any stories beyond adapting the games,” he told Hollywood Reporter. “We won’t run into the same issue as Game of Thrones since Part II doesn’t end on a cliffhanger.”
Craig Mazin, the series' screenwriter, explained that, while the show might be continued, he does not intend to create filler content or keep the show going past its prime.
“I don’t have any interest in a spinning-plates-go-on-forever show,” Mazin explained in the interview. “When it becomes a perpetual motion machine, it just can’t help but get kind of … stupid. Endings mean everything to me.”
The Last Of Us TV series will debut on 15th January 2023, with the first season following the events of the first Last Of Us game. The second season will likely cover the events of The Last Of Us Part II game.
