Valve was in "attendance" at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 trade show in Las Vegas, where they partnered with global tech company Lenovo to issue a major announcement. During the presentation, Lenovo presented a demonstration of their forthcoming handheld device, the Legion Go S, which allowed Valve to unveil the SteamOS, which the Lenovo Legion Go S will be the first third-party device to support the software.

According to an official announcement post from Valve on 7th January 2025, the Lenovo Legion Go S will launch as "the first handheld officially licensed" to be shipped with Valve's operating system, the SteamOS. As of writing, Lenovo has yet to officially announce a launch date for the Lenovo Legion Go S handheld device, but it is expected to hit retail sometime in 2025.

Lenovo and Valve announced at Lenovo's CES 2025 presentation that the Lenovo Legion Go S – Powered by SteamOS is the first "officially licensed" handheld to be "Powered by SteamOS." In the official announcement post from Valve, this "operating system" was built "to provide a seamless user experience optimized for gaming, while retaining access to the power and flexibility of a PC."

They further elaborated that the Valve team has been working on new updates specifically to support the forthcoming handheld device to ensure that players are given "the same seamless experience customers expect" akin to the Steam Deck. Additionally, Valve will be working to provide substantial updates for the SteamOS to be supported on the Lenovo Legion Go S – Powered by SteamOS, which "will improve compatibility with other handhelds."

As to when players can expect these updates for the SteamOS, Valve stated that a SteamOS beta will be shipped before the Legion Go S – Powered by SteamOS launch soon for them to test, promising more support to arrive in "future releases." For Legion Go S – Powered by SteamOS owners, this handheld will also feature cloud saves, Remote Play, a fully accessible Steam Store, and Library access as this handheld is poised to take "a big step forward in freedom of choice for gamers who are looking for an OS that is optimized for handheld gaming."
