These Fallout Vault 33 Glasses Are Perfect For Seeing The Apocalypse Roll In
GUNNAR

Fallout fans have a new batch of practical merch that they can get their hands on thanks to GUNNAR Optiks, who have launched new eyewear themed around Fallout, Amazon Studios’ hit adaptation of the post-apocalyptic video game series. The Fallout x Gunnar range features a choice between prescription, sunglasses, or the GUNNAR-Focus glasses. Regardless of your preference, the lens fits into a Gunmetal & Olive frame.

Like most, I spend more time than I should looking at screens. Whether it’s for work, games, or games for work, I’m constantly staring at bright lights and pixels. As a result of that, I’m no stranger to eye strain. Should I raise this with an optometrist? Probably. Will I wait until my vision is as smeared as grease on a window before I do anything about it? Very likely.

Thankfully, GUNNAR allowed me to put it off even longer by letting me try out one of their new Fallout-themed glasses. All jokes aside, my eyesight isn’t a need for concern just yet, but I do get some slight discomfort from too much screen time. Since I didn’t need any major prescription, or the sunglasses (who goes outside?), I opted for the GUNNAR-Focus with the Clear 35, and put it to the test over a number of weeks to see if they offered me any relief. And you know what? I was quickly won over.

I used them both throughout the working day, as I poured over articles and edits, and post-work in the limited free time I have to actually play games for fun. I found that they took away a lot of the harshness of the screen that becomes especially more apparent as the day drags on. They were particularly helpful on those nights that I ended up working later than usual. Because these only offered a small amount of blue light blocking, compared to the stronger Clear 65, I didn't lose much in terms of color when playing games, which meant the glasses were not as much of a distraction as I had thought.

These Fallout Vault 33 glasses do have a downside, however, and it seems to stem from favoring style over function. While the design of the frames is very in-keeping with the Fallout style, that retro-futuristic take on the post apocalypse, the metal temples are quite thin and can feel as though they’re pinching into the skin after an extended use, particularly around the tops of the ears. That said, you’re unlikely to be wearing these all day, and only for a few hours at most while you sort out some work or play a few online matches. Plus, when ordering, you're able to choose slightly wider sizes which might alleviate this issue. Perhaps I've just got a bigger head than I thought.

The packaging and presentation of the glasses is something that Fallout fans will marvel at. Included with your Fallout Vault 33 glasses are a few collector’s items, including a themed case, microfiber cleaning cloth and pouch. The case takes on the iconic Vault-Tec Blue, repping the Vault-Tec Industries logo on the outside. The Vault 33 theming continues on the microfiber cleaning cloth, with the microfiber pouch displaying both the Fallout and GUNNAR logos. All of these extras felt very high quality, especially the case which I think might even withstand a real nuclear war.

The Fallout Vault 33 glasses are certainly one of the most striking collaborations from GUNNAR, and are an excellent addition to any Fallout fan’s collection with the added benefit of actually being useful. The glasses are set to be restocked again in August, after a very successful first run saw them sell out rapidly. Fans can pre-order a set via the GUNNAR website
