The retro-inspired RPG Sea of Stars is approaching its first anniversary this August when developer Sabotage Studio announced a DLC is planned with production to commence in 2024. This was confirmed in a social media post for which the forthcoming expansion, Throes of the Watchmaker, started its production in January 2024.
Time has passed since the announcement was made, and not much is known about the DLC other than an interview with game director Thierry Boulanger last year (h/t GamesRadar/Kakuchopurei). This changed when the game's Twitter account provided an update on the Throes of the Watchmaker DLC's development; however, no release date was announced.
Pre-production for Sea of Stars' DLC, Throes of the Watchmaker, began in October 2023, before the aforementioned post announced that it had "officially graduated from pre-production!" Since January 2024, Sabotage Studio has remained silent on the expansion's development, which Boulanger commented in a radio interview will be a "fully-fledged side-adventure DLC."
Recently, the developer responded to a fan response from June 2024 regarding any updates for the Throes of the Watchmaker DLC. The developer's responded, "Production on the DLC is going well. More details will come later this year!"
This gives fans a workable timeline on when the developer will officially detail new information for the forthcoming DLC, which we know will expand the world from the base game "and provide additional insight on the narrative overarching all of our games," according to Boulanger's interview. While fans have been connecting some dots between the game's events and what the DLC may involve surrounding the Watchmaker character, it's a matter of time until Sabotage Studio unveils new information for the DLC sometime this year.
In our review of Sea of Stars, which we gave a 9/10, we stated that "Sea of Stars is a gorgeous love letter to its predecessors, and avid fans of the genre should pick it up without a second hesitation." Sea of Stars is currently available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4&5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
