"The Year of Shadow" will kick into high gear this December with the dark and brooding character finally making his long-awaited appearance in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film. But before we get reacquainted with Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by Hollywood icon Keanu Reeves, Japanese publisher SEGA announced a new Shadow-themed surprise for Sonic gaming fans to look forward to this December, too!
The upcoming Shadow-themed DLC was announced during the recent PlayStation State of Play presentation, which was later discussed in a post on PlayStation Blog. The game's Series Producer, Shun Nakamura, detailed what to anticipate in this upcoming DLC arriving to consoles and PC this December, ahead of the film's release that month.
In a PlayStation Blog interview with Sonic series producer Shun Nakamura, the Sonic X Shadow Generations' Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Pack welcomes the stoic film version of Shadow the Hedgehog. The DLC launches on 12th December 2024, a week before the film's global theatrical release on 20th December 2024, in which SEGA collaborated with Reeves to bring this iconic character to the action platformer game.
Nakamura-san revealed that development on the Sonic 3 Movie pack started last Autumn; however, adding that the Sonic Team wasn't anticipating adding a film version of Shadow the Hedgehog to the game. He later continued that given the proximity of the game and film's releases, there was "an almost festival-like opportunity" to bring the film Shadow to the game.
How the film Sonic fits with the overall theme and story of Sonic x Shadow Generations, Nakamura-san stated that "it should be positioned as bonus content. In the base game, Shadow has his own dedicated story, including achieving his new Doom Powers and reliving the memories of his creation, which is unique to this game."
He further elaborated, "There are things bit different in the movie – that is why I think saying this as a bonus content would be suitable. But you can play and control Shadow like you have played in the base game." The Sonic 3 Movie Pack is included with the game's Digital Deluxe Edition, available to pre-order via their preferred digital marketplace or through the official game website, which the base game launches on 25th October 2024.
